What's free software, and what's not (for data, not code)
Once again, there was this discussion in #debian-games (on oftc)
1 22:33 < leileilol> i wish someone made Free music :/
2 22:33 < leileilol> every 'free music' artist tends to creativecommons their work and keep their source :/
3 22:34 < leileilol> i'd love to see (and hear) gpl'd tracker modules
4 23:00 < sam> I'd love to see free MODs, too
5 23:01 < leileilol> most tracker modules are copyrighted and don't have license info in them and are often mistakenly assumed to be public domain
6 23:02 < leileilol> also most have copyrighted non-free samples
7 23:02 < leileilol> i still wonder about the inclusion of TOCCATA.MOD in freecraft even today
Summary: There's a need for free software data like, music, sound effects, graphics, 3d models, fonts...
1 09:23 < leileilol> yeah but i'm unsure of tuxkart
2 09:23 < leileilol> because it has plenty of nonfree media in it
3 09:23 < leileilol> mostly in the textures and sounds
4 09:25 < leileilol> at least supertuxkart tries to fix the nonfree media issues
5 09:25 < leileilol> though i was involved in their mailing list notifying them last year
6 09:26 < leileilol> playing so many games and using windows gives me quite an eye for recognizing
7 09:26 < leileilol> tuxkart used some aol sounds too
8 09:26 < leileilol> and the infamous descent explosion
9 09:27 < leileilol> supertux still uses windows sounds :/
10 09:28 < leileilol> ksmiletris still uses command & conquer soudns too :/
11 09:28 < tarzeau> are there bug reports?
12 09:28 < leileilol> oh and blob wars metal blob solid is a big offender in the sounds category
Summary: Some user thinks Debian has nonfree data, but when is data not free? Trademarks? Copyrights?
1 09:28 < tarzeau> what about a wiki.debian.org/rly-free-software project cleaning up the mess?
2 09:28 < tarzeau> not like i love this kind of work, but i've done this before with many stuff
3 09:28 < leileilol> could be a good idea
4 09:29 < leileilol> it's hard to play a linux game without seeing nonfree things i recognize :O
5 09:29 < tarzeau> actually i always talk to developers about licensing, and often they convert from non-free into free software projects (just happened
6 last week again with a great tool)
7 09:29 < tarzeau> it sucks, yes
8 09:29 < leileilol> like the use of at&t's proprietary text to speech system for kraptor's voices
9 09:29 < tarzeau> atmosphere can suffer up to -30%
10 09:29 < tarzeau> leileilol: what we really need is pools
11 09:29 < tarzeau> leileilol: for fonts, sound effects, music files and graphics, 3d models for reuse
12 09:29 < leileilol> oh and scorched3d's elite force explosions and "freeware" sounds
13 09:30 < tarzeau> leileilol: like a debian.org/projectpage with all the free stuff
14 09:30 < tarzeau> sorted by type, then license
15 09:30 < leileilol> sounds like a good idea
16 09:30 < leileilol> for a replacement of the 8bit descent explosion i've done a Free version based on openarena's gpl explosion shader
17 09:30 < tarzeau> because when somenoe is a great coder, he can make great code but when he has no data to do his project, all the good code is like worth
18 nothing (simply said)
19 09:31 < tarzeau> and i also believe data should be generated, like
20 09:31 < leileilol> http://mancubus.net/~cheapy/fsfps/etc/boom.gif
21 09:31 < tarzeau> there's povrayed graphics, rendered mp3/ogg from tracker music
22 09:31 < tarzeau> keep the originals (for improvement)
23 09:31 < tarzeau> remember the mr. boom graphics? Baby ?
24 09:31 < leileilol> yeah
25 09:31 < tarzeau> leileilol: looks nice
26 09:31 < tarzeau> i really hate the linux projects that just have stub shit bad graphics
27 09:31 < tarzeau> that destroys a project immediately
28 09:32 < leileilol> i'm more appreciative of bad and original graphics over good stolen graphics
29 09:32 < tarzeau> leileilol: bub-n-bros.sf.net is free (also the data), but some poeple think otherwise
30 09:33 < leileilol> ohhh, that one is definitely non-free
31 09:33 < tarzeau> i mean i've gotten teh mail from the original (it's a remake of the mac os version)
32 09:33 < tarzeau> leileilol: no it's not, likewise with mazeofgalious, it's free, the graphics is not ripped. it's redone
33 09:33 < leileilol> but that's a trademarked character
34 09:33 < tarzeau> it's like the cleanroom coding
35 09:33 < leileilol> copyrighted
36 09:33 < tarzeau> leileilol: bullshit
37 09:33 < leileilol> not bullshit
38 09:33 < tarzeau> leileilol: no it's not. find me the trademark
39 09:33 < leileilol> Taito
40 09:33 < tarzeau> find me the copyright. it's not
41 09:34 < leileilol> 1986, bubble bobble
42 09:34 < tarzeau> leileilol: look you can copyright something yes
43 09:34 < tarzeau> but you can't stop people doing remakes
44 09:34 < tarzeau> it's not called bubble bobble
45 09:34 < leileilol> bub is a copyrighted character
46 09:34 < tarzeau> and A is a copyrighted letter?
47 09:34 < leileilol> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubble_Bobble
48 09:34 < tarzeau> you can't copyright three letters
49 09:34 < tarzeau> wikipedia is not the court
50 09:34 < leileilol> ...
51 09:34 < tarzeau> everyone can write shit into wikipedia
52 09:35 < tarzeau> but check supermaryo chronicels in debian....
