iwconfig is similar to ifconfig, but is dedicated to wireless networking interfaces.

It is used to set the parameters of the network interface which are specific to the wireless operation (eg. frequency, SSID). iwconfig may also be used to display those parameters, and the wireless statistics (extracted from /proc/net/wireless). It works in tandem with iwlist, which generates lists of available wireless networks.

iwconfig is part of the wireless-tools for Linux package maintained by Jean Tourrilhes. Due to the relative complexity of requiring two separate commands to find and sync with a wireless access point, some recommend using frontends provided by GNOME and KDE, or an application called NetGo, to manipulate these settings.
