Firmware > OpenFirmware

Open Firmware (noto anche come OpenBoot) è un firmware indipendente dall'hardware (software che carica il sistema operativo), sviluppato da Mitch Bradley alla Sun Microsystems e utilizzato, tra gli altri, nei computer Apple Macintosh successivi ai NuBus basati su PowerPC (sebbene sia stato eliminato nel passaggio di Apple ai processori Intel), workstation e server basati su Sun Microsystems SPARC, sistemi IBM POWER e PegasosPPC. Open Firmware compie le stesse operazioni di un BIOS sui computer PC.

Vi si accede come utente con un'interfaccia shell basata su Forth, che è un potente linguaggio di alto livello.

Per Open Firmware, Debian utilizza il boot loader YaBoot.
