Per creare i file indice vengono usati gli strumenti dpkg-scanpackages(1) e dpkg-scansources(1) (nel pacchetto dpkg-dev): 

cd /debian
dpkg-scansources dists/local/custom/source | gzip > dists/local/custom/source/Sources.gz
dpkg-scanpackages dists/local/custom/binary-i586 | gzip > dists/local/custom/binary-i586/Packages.gz

File override

Può essere opzionalmente specificato un file override. Per le vecchie versioni di Debian (etch o precedenti), se non esiste un file override, deve essere fornito esplicitamente l'argomento /dev/null.
