how-can-i-help hooks into APT to list opportunities for contributions to Debian (orphaned packages, bugs tagged 'gift') for packages installed locally, after each APT invocation. It can also be invoked directly, and then lists all opportunities for contribution (not just the new ones).

Opportunities for contribution

'Gift' bugs

The gift tag indicates bugs that are suitable for new contributors to Debian, willing to make a gift to Debian maintainers, or to Debian in general.

list of bugs tagged gift, another list

gift is a usertag, but the bts command has a shortcut for it: bts tag 12345 + gift

For more information, see qa.debian.org/GiftTag.

WNPP packages

There are different kind of WNPP packages:

  • Orphaned (O): the package is unmaintained, feel free to adopt it

  • Request For Adopter (RFA): maintainer looking for adopter, but continues work in the meantime. Feel free to adopt it. A mail to the current maintainer is polite

  • Intent To Adopt (ITA): someone intends to adopt the package. You could propose your help!

For more information about the process of adopting packages, refer to the Packaging Tutorial.
