This Quick Introduction and related pages explain the Debian operating system to new users. No technical words are used. What "Debian" is and how you can use it is explained without complexity.
Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the kernel is the core of an OS), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; thus we give credit to all sources when we refer to Debian as a Debian GNU/Linux operating system.
Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over 15490 packages, precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine.
