What is a repository?

A repository is a server containing a set of binary or source packages organized into a special directory tree for installation. Client computers can connect to the repository to download and install the packages using an Apt-based package management tool.

Official Repository

An official repository contains official packages as provided by Debian.

Unofficial Repository

An unofficial repository may contain unofficial packages, not available from Debian, or modified packages.
