Your Name

I am currently in the NM process: https://nm.debian.org/nmstatus.php?email=siretart%40tauware.de

My packages in debian: http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=siretart@tauware.de

What were you doing in Debian before joining Ubuntu ?

I was mainly a debian user and sysadmin, and filed bugs. I tried to understand how and why debian works.

What are you doing for Ubuntu ?

I'm mainly part of the MOTU team, caring and maintaining the 'universe' component. I am on of the authors of http://revu.tauware.de.

What are you doing nowadays in Debian ?

* I try to reduce divergence in ubuntu from debian.

* Recently I joined the pkg-games-devel team, where I try to do the things I wanted to do with [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Teams/Games MOTUGames].

* I care for my [http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=siretart@tauware.de packages]

Can you explain the change (if any) ?

During my work in ubuntu, I understand many things which work in debian, and things which have gone wrong. I also understand that helping to improve debian improves ubuntu as well.

I think that debian is a very successful project. Nevertheless, some views are rather extreme. ubuntu however strongly focuses on the user and modern hardware, and seeks pragmatic ways to satisfy a large userbase.

Many Debian Developers seek for technical superiority in their packages. Without them, ubuntu could never exist.

Nowadays, if I find an area which I want to improve, I work on it and upload to ubuntu. I ask the maintainer if he would accept my work. If he does, then I continue my work in debian, syncing changes to ubuntu.

So, my involvement in Debian has increased, and I even applied for NM.

What do you think of the Debian-Ubuntu collaboration ?

There are way to many flamewars, which are time consuming and stressful. On ubuntu, we don't have ressources and time to join all of them, so I think some of the ubuntu devs tend to just ignore them. Some DDs seem to misunderstand this and think ubuntu is just a fork without interest in collaboration.

I noticed that many DDs are open for patches and improvements from the ubuntu side, when they are approached individually. OTOH, some DDs get annoyed when they are not approached, and express this loudly in flamewars on personal blogs or public mailing lists. This makes me sad.

What do you wish for the future ?

I'd whish that DDs would complain their problems rather directly to our mailing list or irc channels than to their personal blogs. It is very disappointing when you read that some package got broken but the write wouldn't care anyway (why is he writing posts like that at all?)
