How to install X2Go server on Debian 10

I know most of you're familiar with VNC but I'd like to talk about X2Go which uses NX 3 Protocol

X2Go enables you to access a graphical desktop of a computer over a low bandwidth (or high bandwidth) connection.

Originally, X2Go has been licensed under the GPL (GNU General Public License)

Install X2Go server

First, let's install X2Go server

$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt -y install x2goserver
$ apt list x2goserver x2goserver-xsession
Listing... Done
x2goserver-xsession/stable,now 4.1.0.3-4 all [installed,automatic]
x2goserver/stable,now 4.1.0.3-4 amd64 [installed]

Install XFCE desktop

Next, let's install XFCE (version 4) which is a lightweight desktop environment recommended by X2Go

$ sudo apt -y install xfce4

Choose lightdm for display manager

Install X2Go client

If you're using macOS for primary client, you can install x2goclient using brew:

% brew install x2goclient
==> Downloading https://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-macosx/x2goclient/releases/4.1.2.2/x2goclient-4.1.2.2.20200213.OSX_10_13.dmg
######################################################################## 100.0%
==> Installing Cask x2goclient
==> Moving App 'x2goclient.app' to '/Applications/x2goclient.app'
🍺  x2goclient was successfully installed!

For other types of clients, you can find them here: https://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:installation:x2goclient

Connect to X2Go server

To connect, you need to configure your x2go client first.

I recommend the following settings if you're using ssh key connection:

Session Name: Debian Server
Host: {name or IP address of your Debian Server}
Login: {your username}
SSH port: 22
[x] Try auto login (via SSH Agent or default SSH Key)
Session Type: XFCE

You can also click on the "Connection" tab to adjust your connection speed.

Before you click the Session Name, change the resolution from "800x600" to higher if you prefer.

That's it. You're now ready to connect to your Debian Server with x2go!

If you see "Welcome to the first start of the panel", click on "Use default config"
