Welcome Team

This is the Debian Welcome team, which exists to help new users and aspiring contributors move across Debian.

Goals

The goals of this team are (more or less):

  • Make Debian more welcoming for the new users
  • Make Debian more welcoming for aspiring contributors
  • Guide them through the existing resources while improving them
  • Help seasoned developers find new ways to contribute.
  • Serve as liaison between newcomers and Teams (recommend ways of involvement, whom to talk to...)
  • Gather all the existing experience about mentorship in several teams, and offer their guidelines/tricks to the whole community

Contact

The primary contact means is the #debian-welcome channel on OFTC (see below).

Current team members are:

Add your name if you want to join the Welcome Team.

Please keep the list current: removing your name or moving it to "Emeritus" below is perfectly fine too, and desirable if you are not available or prefer to invest your time in other things.

IRC channel

The channel exists to attend to people looking for directions, and potentially recruit new greeters.

It is a safe space where any question can be asked.

It is a a place where questions are not necessarily answered in full, but are at least answered with an actionable item, so that one that is lost comes out with a thing to do in the right direction.

In order to save time and resources, try to avoid long digressions in the channel, and to make sure that we have adequate documentation. An invitation to discover/help/document or a personal story can be more useful and empowering than a long explanation.

The idea is to be the guides at the tourist information office, not the guides that lead people in tours.

Brainstorming

We gather ideas and links about how to start contributing to Debian in our BrainStorming subpage.

Some of the ideas are written in a more detailed way, or we find people that can devote time specifically to newcomers in that task. Then, the idea is listed below, in the "Debian Welcomes..." section.

Becoming a team member

Who could (should!) be member of the team

  • People involved in Debian, but not "core members". New maintainers, or DD applicants, or regular member of teams:
    • so they still remember how it was when one is beginning.
    • so they are not seen as "wow, DD, very busy person, better not bother her" from the outside.
    • AMs can be asked to invite like-minded applicants to join
  • People that had experienced "the silence" (not getting a reply to a question, or not knowing what to do next and not knowing who to ask) in Debian but are still here, and want new people to have somebody that listens and answers.
  • People that had received good mentorship/advice in Debian and want new people to experience the same.

Who shouldn't be member of the team (not a strict ban, just our recommendation)

  • People willing to give user support: better contribute in http://www.debian.org/support

  • People willing to mentor in specific fields: please join #debian-mentors, contact NM Front Desk to become Application Manager, or join the Outreach Team.

Emeritus Team members

Thanks to all the former team members for their contributions and support!
