Release testing

Simple: list here the tests that you've done on the images you've downloaded. Help us make this release (Stretch 9.0) the best one ever!

We need to know, for each test:

Thanks for your help! :-)

We will be co-ordinating on IRC (#debian-cd on irc.debian.org) to ensure that we cover the stuff we want, and to avoid duplication of efforts.

Where to download from

As we build images during release day, they will appear in the following locations:

Please do not publicise this too widely, and if you're reading this page to get early access to our images BE AWARE that anything found there is not considered to be a released image and may be replaced without warning.

Remember to verify physical install media before you start testing it!

Downloading via rsync:

rsync can be used to speed up downloads if you already have a partial or previous image.

List of tests

Our preferred list of tests to be run is below. Please take a test and run it. First priority: if you have uncommon (i.e. non-x86 hardware), please start testing that first! Otherwise, pick the first one that's not already claimed. If there's nothing that suits, please make up another test and add that then run it.

To claim a test, edit this page and add your name/nick next to it with a time in UTC and INPROGRESS. Once you're done, change INPROGRESS to SUCCESS or FAILURE. Let's try to avoid duplication of effort!

If you do need to list a failure report, please file a bug against installation-reports immediately and tell us more on irc. It's possible that we may need to rebuild some of the CDs or DVDs based on feedback here; other bugs found may just end up being listed in errata. Either way, we need to know ASAP.

Specific things we want to check for:

Boot time

debian-installer

After installation

Finally

List of wanted tests

If the field isn't specified please decide what option to use yourself and note it down for reporting.

If you are able to test more than one combination please pick the most obscure first. Likewise, if you can use IPV6 please do so as most people will typically use IPV4 with DHCP clients.

The aim is to get the best spread of all possible options so if you can test an encrypted file system on top of SW RAID and LVM please do!

We'll try and keep track of test coverage achived and post often...

Errata

Please log issues as they arrive here (and bug number when it's filed!) but don't forget to TELL US in IRC as soon as you find a problem!

#1 guided partitioning can show issues on setups with very small disks

Test run 023: 16GB VM image with separate /, /home, /var and /tmp at suggested sizes. Installation fails (out of disk space on /)

/target

3.1G

/target/home

8.9G

/target/tmp

316M

/target/var

1.3G

Changing the sizes of / (sawpped size with /home) fixed the issues

#2 multi-arch amd64/i386/source DVD not big enough

This DVD image just doesn't contain enough packages to be useful for a graphical installation on its own. Dropping it for this release, as it's just not useful any more.

#3 multi-arch netinst fails to start i386 in UEFI mode when selecting "graphical install" option

On the amd64/i386 multi-arch netinst image, testing showed problems trying to boot via UEFI on an i386 virtual machine. This still needs testing on real i386 hardware to verify the problem.

#4 KDE live desktop unstable on some (tested) hardware

There is a segmentation fault in kmanage - the first obvious symptom will be a failure to atuomatically log in. A workaround is to switch to VT1 and wait for the desktop to start there. This has been reproduced on hardware (using Intel graphics?), but not when testing in a virtual machine.

#5 Live images isolinux menu display problems

When booted in BIOS mode using isolinux, some of the localisation options from the "Debian Live with Localisation Support" submenu are displayed incorrectly. They may appear intermittently and then disappear. They can still be selected and used - be careful when selecting one.

#6 Live images are not configuring UTF-8 console correctly

After boot, X-based terminal programs will display non-ASCII characters correctly, but the Linux console is not. The system is configured to use UTF-8 locales, but the console is defaulting to ISO-8859-15. There is a quick workaround: "dpkg-reconfigure console-setup" and select "UTF-8".
