Bookworm Image Testing Coordination
Contents
Release testing
Simple: list here the tests that you've done on the images you've downloaded. Help us make this release (bookworm 12.7) the best one ever!
We need to know, for each test:
- architecture
- type of hardware (make, model etc. if relevant)
- image used (full filename please!)
- installer display type (text/gui/serial/?)
- how you booted it (ISO / USB stick / network etc.)
- language / kb layout etc. chosen
- network / no network connected
- filesystem layout choices
- choice of desktop
- BIOS / UEFI if applicable
- Real Hardware or VM (and type of VM)
did all go OK? If not, we need to know today - tell us on IRC
- anything unexpected?
Thanks for your help!
We will be co-ordinating on IRC (#debian-cd on irc.debian.org) to ensure that we cover the stuff we want, and to avoid duplication of efforts.
How to download test images
As we build images during release day, they will appear ready for download.
Please do not publicise locations of these images, and if you're reading this page to get early access to our images BE AWARE that anything found there is not considered to be a released image and may be replaced without warning.
Remember to verify physical install media before you start testing it!
http locations
Downloading via rsync
rsync can be used to speed up downloads if you already have a partial or previous image.
- Rsync server: 'cdimage.debian.org::cdimage/.bookworm_release/debian-cd/'
- Listing isos on that server: 'rsync -rdt cdimage.debian.org::cdimage/.bookworm_release/debian-cd'
- Syncing an image to a local file, first rsync source then destination file: 'rsync -zavP cdimage.debian.org::cdimage/.bookworm_release/debian-cd/amd64/iso-cd/debian-12.7.0-amd64-netinst.iso debian-12.7.0-amd64-netinst.iso'
List of tests
Our preferred list of tests may be found in the tables below. Please claim an unclaimed test and run it. First priority: if you have uncommon (i.e. non-x86) hardware, please start testing that first! Otherwise, pick the first one that's not already . If there's nothing that suits, please make up another test and add that then run it.
To claim a test, edit this page and add your name/nick next to it with CLAIMED. Once you're done, change CLAIMED to PASSED or FAILED. Let's try to avoid duplication of effort!
When editing the wiki page PLEASE PLEASE ensure that nobody else is already editing this page - co-ordinate in IRC first! (Hint watch IRC for a little while to see the work flow)
If you do need to list a failure report, please file a bug against installation-reports immediately and tell us more on irc. It's possible that we may need to rebuild some of the CDs or DVDs based on feedback here; other bugs found may just end up being listed in errata. Either way, we need to know ASAP.
Specific things we want to check for:
Boot time
- Make sure that the boot menu comes up where applicable:
- syslinux for i386 (CD boot)
- syslinux for i386 (USB boot)
- syslinux for amd64 via BIOS (CD boot)
- syslinux for amd64 via BIOS (USB boot)
- grub for i386 via UEFI (CD boot)
- grub for i386 via UEFI (USB boot)
- grub for amd64 via UEFI (CD boot)
- grub for amd64 via UEFI (USB boot)
- Make sure that the boot menu is functional:
- is it visible properly (i.e. no graphics corruption etc.)?
- can you scroll up and down?
- can you select submenus?
- On other platforms without menus, check that the image boots and displays startup text:
- yaboot on powerpc
- etc...
- On Desktop installs / live images
- start a couple of applications
- open firefox and visit a page containing video
- open a Libre Office Document
- start a couple of applications
- On Console installs
- run DF
- ping something (if network connected)
debian-installer
- Check that the selected installation type starts up:
- Text mode
- Graphics mode (where appropriate)
- Serial mode (where appropriate)
- With speech assistance (where appropriate)
- Select your own language and preferred keyboard layout etc.
- feel free to try other languages and layouts if you're comfortable with them; we really want to get good coverage of the common choices will be covered already!
- Choose whether to connect your test machine to the network or not. We want to test installation using:
- just the contents of the CD images
- with networking, but no extra mirrors specified (i.e. security.d.o only)
- with access to a package mirror
- If you do allow a net connection, note whether IPv4 and/or IPv6 worked correctly. Feel free to try a static networking setup instead of the default DHCP (update the results table!).
- Set up user accounts as you normally would for any installation.
- Try a variety of different filesystem layouts: (the test matrix below should give enough coverage but feel free to add your own)
- auto layout
- guided
- manual
- Please try some different filesystems, and ideally some software RAID and LVM options too. Be aware that if you want to test encryption, it will take a *long* time to write random data to initialise things, so only set up a small LVM area unless you want to block the installation for (potentially) many hours!
- Go through tasksel and pick a semi-random selection of the available tasks.
- Make sure that there are appropriate tasks listed:
- The desktop task will only appear if you have enough of the task available (i.e. a full CD/DVD etc. or you've added a network mirror)
- "Standard system utilities" should always appear.
- Note down what you selected, and make sure it all installs OK.
- Make sure that there are appropriate tasks listed:
- Finalising the installation: make sure that the appropriate bootloader installs correctly and let it reboot.
After installation
- Check the machine boots ok and the selected desktop (or console-only system) starts correctly when you log in.
- If you have a desktop, check it contains a reasonable-looking (if minimal!) set of programs.
If you have lots of time: while here, try to launch each application from the default menus and ensure they start; on the desktop's default panels (if any), check that all widgets are functioning. These bugs should be filed against the applications themselves.
Finally
- Report back...!
List of wanted tests
DI Images
If the field isn't specified please decide what option to use yourself and note it down for reporting.
If you are able to test more than one combination please pick the most obscure first. Likewise, if you can use IPV6 please do so as most people will typically use IPV4 with DHCP clients.
The aim is to get the best spread of all possible options so if you can test an encrypted file system on top of SW RAID and LVM please do!
We'll try and keep track of test coverage achieved and post often...

Live errata & Notes
Please log issues as they arrive here (and bug number when it's filed!) but don't forget to TELL US in IRC as soon as you find a problem! irc.debian.org/#debian-live
For the avoidance of doubt in this testing: there is almost no i386 vintage hardware capable of booting from UEFI. The remaining i386 images will be tested to see that they boot. There are (relatively) few i386 machines with enough memory to do justice to live image booting.
Carried over from 12.0, please indicate in comments field if you encounter these problems again in this release, likewise please add new erratas as required
1. Disconnecting a monitor in a live environment may cause the display to be blank when re-connected. Switching to a virtual terminal allows for recovery. It is not established whether this problem is DE-specific or whether having multiple graphics cards may exacerbate it. (This seems to have been a hardware-specific issue)
2. In live images before Debian 12.7 the system may show a password prompt when taking certain actions, such as changing system settings or starting the installer. The password to use is 'live'. This issue will be corrected in a later update of the live images. 1037295 seems to be fixed in 12.7
3. In the XFCE live images of Debian 12.7, the "Install Debian" icon on the desktop results in a prompt with title "Untrusted application launcher". The same installer can be started via the main menu in the top left corner (Applications -> System -> Install Debian), which works normally. (1037299)
4. The live images are missing metadata for firmware, so speech installation will fail on hardware that needs it. (1057844)
5. Known Calamares issue (992164): if you have an existing LVM setup on the disk when you start, Calamares fails the installation. It will let you complete almost all of the installation, then fail to install a bootloader. No sign of a fix coming for this.
6. The KDE live image does not include a launcher icon on the desktop for the Calamares live installer (1057853)
7. In the XFCE live image and installed system, a spurious "IBus Notification" is seen on login (1063661)
8. Installing from Calamares when connman is live (i.e. lxqt or lxde), if no network is available. Installing grub fails badly - apt never manages to download the grub package(s) due to connman's DNS server not failing properly. (1080207)
