inline:Portal/IDB/logo_portal.png Welcome to ["Debian"] system virtualization

inline:Portal/IDB/icon-emulator-32x32.png This portal talk about virtualization. Technical language could be used.

In computing, platform virtualization is a term that refers to the abstraction of computer resources. Virtualization hides the physical characteristics of computing resources from their users (more on [wiki:Virtualization Wikipedia])

Note that virtualization is different than ["Emulator"], which duplicates (provides an emulation of) the functions of one system using a different system, so that the second system behaves like (and appears to be) the first system (more on [wiki:Emulator Wikipedia])

Using Debian to host Virtual Computers

Open Source solution

  • ["?LinuxVserver"] - Mostly used on server - Not really a virtualization, It creates multiple isolated containers.

  • [:QEMU:Qemu] and ["KVM"] - Mostly used on Desktop/Laptops.

  • ["UserModeLinux"] (Not really a virtualization).

  • ["VirtualBox"] - Mostly used on Desktop/Laptops.

  • ["VMware"] - Mostly used on Desktop/Laptops.
  • ["Xen"] - Mostly used on server.
  • ["OpenVz"] - Mostly used on server - Not really a virtualization, It creates multiple isolated containers.

Proprietary software

  • ["VMware"] - Virtualization tool.

Running Debian inside a Virtual computer

  • Debian inside Microsoft [:InstallingDebianOn/VMs/MicrosoftVirtualPc2007/etch:Virtual PC 2007].
  • Debian inside Microsoft [:WindowsServerHyperV:Hyper-V].
