#language en = Student Application Template = * '''Name''' Catalin Vasile * '''Contact/Email''': catalinvasile92@gmail.com * '''Background''': I'm in my 3rd year as a student at Computer-Science. My favorite subjects, so far, have been related to low level programming, computer architecture and networking. I've won first prize 3 years in a row at a national competition related to networking. Also, now I'm a Cisco junior academy teacher. I'm currently a teaching assistant for a bachelor course named "Computer Organisation and Assembly Language" and I'm contributing with materials for another course named "Communication Protocols". My favorite courses, so far, have been "Computer Architecture" 1 and 2, and this semester I'm looking forward in a course named "Operating Systems", where we dive in system programming concepts. In the future I'm thinking of getting into developing system application, or even get into kernel programming. * '''Project title''' Improve Debian on mips64el * '''Project details''': As I'm mostly interested in low level programming and computer architecture, I'm very interested in the project named in the rows above, as I'm wishful to learn new low level computer concepts and getting into kernel programming. * '''Synopsis''': I can work most of the summer away at this project. I'm only planning a week off, somewhere in the middle of the summer. * '''Benefits to Debian''' You'll be having a hardworking person working on this project, who is very passionate in learning new things, especially on the project that I want to contribute to. * '''Deliverables''': I'm mostly interested in the "kernel package" so that I would could acquire and perfect new skills. The other parts ("package patches" and "debian-installer") are also of interest to me, but not so much as the first mentioned. * '''Project schedule''': As I've researched, it has taken the Debian team to port the OS to mips64el a pretty long time (about half an year). Even on the smallest part I would get, I'm planning on getting it functional until the end of summer. * '''Exams and other commitments''': Until the 15th of June I'm committed to the college exams session. * '''Other summer plans''': My bachelor program has a 4 year program. The summer between the 3rd and the 4th year I have to get a job as an intern so that I can promote to the next year. * '''Why Debian?''': I choose Debian because is one of the Linux distributions that has the widest spread in Computer Science, servers, etc. Right now I'm running Linux Mint which is based on Ubuntu, which in turn is based on Debian. Also, contributing on an actual wide spread OS project such as Debian ensures me on having real hands one experience in developing actual useful software. Software that isn't just 2 buttons in a window -_-'. * Are you applying for other projects in SoC? Yes I'm applying for other projects as well. I'm interested in projects related to computer architecture and/or kernel development.
