Background: I just finished my 3rd year in the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Computer Science. I've worked on video streaming clients and servers as well as instant messaging clients for Linux and OSX using C, C++ and Java. I have a solid understanding of networks and protocols and would like to put that knowledge to use. Furthermore, I've completed various web applications using Ruby on Rails and GWT. I also have previous experience building Android applications and poses various devices using Android. Therefore, I would like to solidify my knowledge of Debian as well as Android development. I have limited experience with Debian. Nevertheless, this will provide me with the extra motivation that I need to successfully immerse myself in the Debian world and complete a great Android app.
Project title: Debian Android Application
Project details: Debian Developers utilize many online resources on a daily basis in order to properly maintain their packages. Some of these tools include the PTS, BTS, and UDD. It would be nice to have all of this information readily available on a phone/tablet via an android application. The application would use existing Debian APIs to fetch and display all of the information. For things like the BTS, it might support functionality similar to reportbug.
Synopsis: A free Android application that will be used by Debian developers on a daily basis to maintain their packets.
Benefits to Debian
Deliverables: An Android application that is either distributed via the Google Play store (for free) or available for download from a Debian website.
Project schedule:
- I can begin work as early as now (May 2nd) and I'm assuming my mentor will dictate the schedule to be followed.
- I'm assuming that the first weeks of May will be used for familiarization with Debian.
- Mid May, discuss design details.
- June, implementation of working prototype.
- In reality, I can't predict the schedule any further. It will all depend on our priorities.
Mentor: Hans-Christoph Steiner
Exams and other commitments: None.
Other summer plans: Nothing. I'm travelling to Peru right now to visit my family for 4 months. So apart from seeing some old friends from time to time this will be my main focus for the summer.
Why Debian?: Because I want to learn more about operating systems and Debian in particular.
Are you applying for other projects in SoC?: Yes, but I like this one the most .
