Project title : Improving PKI on Debian
Synopsis : Improve the establishment of secure network connections in Debian
Project details : ( extracted from http://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2013/Projects#Improving_PKI_on_Debian)
- “ Many Debian packages offer SSL/TLS connectivity and use X.509 certificates to establish whether or not to trust a connection. Some packages go further, for example, using attributes from the certificate to validate individual messages passed on a connection on a case-by-case basis. The recent compromise of several certificate authorities, and the ease with which fraudsters have been able to obtain fake certificates from others, has raised concern about how much we can rely on TLS. “
Benefits to Debian : Ensure the secure network connections in Debian
Deliverables : - Establish a strategic plan for PKI in Debian
- - Improve or add packages that help fulfill the strategic plan
Project schedule :
17june – 14 july (4 weeks)
Project Analysis :
1.- analyze TLS settings being applied,
2.- store private keys and system level allow specific applications to use them.
3.- Consider that packets can share certificates
4.- Manage the expiration of certificates
5.- Keep a record of trust decisions
6.- add more control at the system level (root CA can rely only on certificates of entities of a particular country or region)
7.- Using PGP instead X.509 certificate
15july – 11 august ( 4 weeks)
- Implementation of the solution and unit testing
12 august – 01 september ( 3 weeks)
- Integration testing
02 september– 23 september (2 weeks)
- Complete with documentation
