seahorse is a GNOME application (also called 'Passwords and Keys') which easily manage encryption keys and passwords through an intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI). Seahorse is able to do various operations. Such as create SSH or PGP keys, configure them, and cache them.

If you choose GNOME as the desktop environment, it should already be installed. If not, you can install it by executing the following command in the terminal:

apt-get install seahorse

Seahorse comes with a built-in help. Find it under "Help" menu ---> "Content" option.

Debian 8 Jessie

Any volunteer to add content to this section?

Debian 7 Wheezy

  • Seahorse is installed but when searching the GNOME interface Seahorse is not showing in the results?
    • This is normal. Seahorse is titled "Passwords and Keys". Simply open "Passwords and Keys". Optionally, navigate to "Help" menu ---> "About" option. A popup window will open. It reads "seahorse" and show its version.
