Distribution Names, Components and Architectures
Debian distributions are named after characters from the "Toy Story" films, such as woody, sarge or sid. In these notes, a new distribution named *local* is created. It is possible to add other distributions for live and test (beta) versions.
Packages are organized into components, traditionally named main, contrib, or non-free. In a local or customized repository, it is possible to add other sections, such as custom or unofficial.
On IBM compatible computers, we traditionally use i386 architecture types. We can add a new architecture i586, to create binary files suitable for use on 586 compatible processors.
