Real Media has supported Linux with the RealPlayer from the beginning. RealPlayer 5, 7, 8 and 9 (?RealOne Alpha release) work with Linux. These can work as a Netscape/Mozilla plug-in or as a stand-alone media player.

Installing RealPlayer from a binary

Since RealPlayer is not in the official Debian repositories, the fastest way to install RealPlayer is by downloading it from Real. This should download a .bin file. Once it has completed downloading, you can install RealPlayer. Next, open a terminal and navigate to the directory you downloaded the file to using ?Cd. If you want all users to be able to use RealPlayer, be sure to run the file as root e.g.

# ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin

You may need to make the file executable in order for it to run. Once it is running, simply follow the instructions. A good place to install it to might be /usr/local/RealPlayer/.

Installing RealPlayer Using Debian's Package Management

Another method of installing RealPlayer would be through Apt or Synaptic. To do this, you must add an appropriate repository in sources.list, such as deb-multimedia.org. To enable this repository, add the following to your /etc/apt/sources.list (as root):

deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org/ release main

Replace release with the name of the version of Debian you are using. If you are using stable, you can write stable or sarge (until etch is released), or, if using testing, you can write testing or etch. You can then download RealPlayer by typing (as root):

# apt-get install realplayer

w32codecs

If you'd prefer to use your own media player, the RealPlayer codecs are included in the package ?w32codecs. This is also not included in the offical Debian repositories, so an appropriate repository must be added - see above to see how to add deb-multimedia.org, which has the appropriate packages.
