What kernel to use ?
Benjamin Herrenschmidt maintained a PPC-specific branch for a long time. More information can be found on [http://ppckernel.org ppckernel.org].
If you want to use 2.4 kernels, you should still use its branch. 2.6 users can use [http://www.kernel.org the normal kernel], as most of the Ben patches are put into it. Use of 2.6 is recommended for new hardware.
