Debian is participating in the 6th Round of the Free & Open Source Software Outreach Program for Women.
Background
Debian has been encouraging women to work in the project for years. Statistics show that although we have increased the number of women participants, we still have plenty of room to grow. With this initiative we hope we can encourage more women to join our project.
For whom
Any woman who has not previously participated in an Outreach Program for Women or Google Summer of Code and is not yet a Debian Developer nor a Debian Maintainer. There is no age restriction and you don't need to be a student to apply.
Timeline
October 1 |
application period opens |
October 1 - November 1 |

December 10 - March 10 |
internship period |
What to do
Choose a project
- Make a small contribution.
- Once you have chosen your project, contact its corresponding mentor and ask him/her what small contribution related to the project you could do.
- Send an application.
To send your application for participating in a Debian project, you should use the Application Template and add your application to the Student Application. This template is the same we use for SummerOfCode2013. If you're only applying for Outreach Program for Women (because you are not a student), don't create an application on Melange (Google Summer of Code specific application) and add a line with the following text to the template: "I'm only applying for OPW".
Please, read more about this program here: https://live.gnome.org/OutreachProgramForWomen
OPW and GSoC
If you meet the requirements for applying in GSoC, we encourage you to apply for OPW. We're using the same application process, so it's quite easy; you only have to fulfill the template mentioned above and create an application on Melange.
Projects
We offer two kind of projects: coding projects and non-coding projects. Coding projects are the same projects as in GSoC program, they are also available for the OPW program.
Here you have the list of the coding projects: SummerOfCode2013/Projects
Here you have the list of the non-coding projects: OutreachProgramForWomen/NonCodingProjects
Where to start
Debian is a huge project, so we have created a welcoming atmosphere:
IRC: #debian-women and #debian-soc in the OFTC network (irc.debian.org)
