 * '''Please describe your experience with Debian as a user and as a contributor (Please include the information about the required contribution you made to the project you are interested in here)''': I have been a Debian user for the past 2 years. I got to learn a lot after using Debian (starting from simple tweaks to configuring system defaults). I love the challenge to configure Debian as per my needs, very interesting. Even though I have tried other distros, Debian is the one I get back to. I have no contributions made to Debian yet. Now that I have started, I hope to contribute more. I started working with the Debian-GNOME team during the application period and have had packaging sessions. I worked on two packages Brasero and GNOME-Music, to understand how packaging is done and to apply patches. I also understood how upstream works and the flow of packages from experimental to unstable to testing and then to stable. I'm hoping to understand how the release team works as the next release is pretty soon.  * '''Please describe your experience with Debian as a user and as a contributor (Please include the information about the required contribution you made to the project you are interested in here)''': I have been a Debian user for the past 2 years. • Please describe your experience with Debian as a user and as a contributor (Please include the information about the required contribution you made to the project you are interested in here): I have been a Debian user for the past 2 years. I got to learn a lot after using Debian (starting from simple tweaks to configuring system defaults). I find the challenge to configure Debian as per my needs, very interesting. Even though I have tried other distros, Debian is the one I get back to. I have no contributions made to Debian yet. Now that I have started, I hope to contribute more. • Please describe your experience with any other FOSS projects as a user and as a contributor:: Using FOSS based projects has induced a passion within me to contribute back to the community. I have just started to contribute to the FOSS community by involving with Debian-Diaspora Packaging team and Debian-GNOME team. So I do not have any significant contributions yet.

  • Please describe any relevant projects that you have worked on previously and what knowledge you gained from working on them:: I have had a lot of sessions with the Debian-Diaspora team for packaging, however, due to some technical issues, I was not able to finish packaging. I got to understand why packaging is necessary and the way the Debian-Diaspora team works to package ruby gems. I also got an opportunity to understand about the Debian community and how it works.

  • What project(s) are you interested in (these can be in the same or different organizations)?: Debian GNOME Team Contributor

  • Who is a possible mentor for the project you are most interested in?: Andreas Henriksson (ah@debian.org)

  • Please describe the details and the timeline of the work you plan to accomplish on the project you are most interested in (discuss these first with the mentor of the project):: A detailed schedule with milestones is difficult to suggest right now as the project is freezing packages for the next release. However, packaging (the remaining packages), bug fixes, forwarding patches to upstream and helping upstream post the freeze are crucial to the project during the internship period and I will work on these. This is just a tentative plan.

  • Will you have any other time commitments, such as school work, another job, planned vacation, etc., between December 10, 2013 and March 10, 2014?: Currently, I'm working part-time for a private firm. If my application gets accepted, I can free up the time to work as a full-time intern for the Debian-GNOME team Contributor project.

  • Background: something about yourself: technical skills, experience, etc. Who are you?: I graduated 4 months back. I am familiar with programming languages like C and python (intermediate level). I have experience using MySQL and love writing Bash Scripts. I have worked with git and github. I'm a free software enthusiast and I love the philosophy of FOSS. I'm part of a Non-Profit organization called Free Software Movement Karnataka (fsmk) and have volunteered to spread the word across various colleges about Free Software and its philosophy.

  • Why Debian? Why are you choosing Debian? What attracts you about Debian? : Debian is a very interesting experience for me. Every time I installed it on different machines, I had to configure and tweak lots of applications to get it to working as I expected. I remember sitting and working for hours to find a fix. Even though other OSes could probably configure the problems I faced automatically when installed, I prefer to use Debian because I love the challenge to find a fix. Usually its a simple tweak which takes a lot of time to discover. I believe Debian as a community is providing the best OS so far, so I want to make as many contributions as possible to help the community maintain the Universal Operating System. The reason why I am attracted to Debian is the philosophy. A community project being this successful without compromising the philosophy is worth contributing to any day.

  • Are you applying for other projects in OPW? Note that letting us know about this does not impact your chances of acceptance or rejection with us; we ask this because it helps us to resolve deduplications wherein an applicant is accepted for multiple projects.: No. Debian GNOME Team Contributor is the only project I have applied for.
