/etc/mime.types is the file in which system-wide rules are defined for mapping filename suffices to media types (MIME types). It is provided by the media-types package.
Each line in the file is a media type declaration:
- Lines starting with a hash # are comments.
- Empty lines can be used visually group related media types.
Other lines have a media type as their first field and the rest of the line is blank or contains space-separated file extensions. For instance, here file suffices are mapped to application media types:
