Debian Developer since 2008-10-14

My Name is Julian Andres Klode. I really started using Debian in 2006, after using several Linux distributions including CRUX, Fedora and Ubuntu (and also Debian for a short time). [and Ubuntu 6.06 LTS crashing every ~5 minutes].

My first contribution to Debian was in April 2007, when my first package (aufs) was uploaded (by daniel). Since then, more and more packages have been uploaded (first by daniel, and later by others as well). One package which has never been uploaded was dcdmake, my first Debian CD creation solution [in bash] (debian-cd is too complicated for me). I stopped its development at the end of 2007, and started working on debimg (see below).

But 2007 was no Debian-only year. In summer 2007, I switched (more or less) completely to Ubuntu 7.10 'gutsy' pre-releases and stayed on the Ubuntu side until after the release of Ubuntu 8.04 in April 2008. During this time, I became involved in Ubuntu development, became an Ubuntu Member in November 2007, and also helped with the aufs integration in casper and requested to migrate ndisgtk to main.

2007 was also the year I bought my first own laptop. This laptop is an HP Compaq 6720s GR#644ET, and Debian runs perfectly on it, including wireless (although you need the non-free firmware for iwl3945/ipw3945), blue tooth, card reader, touchpad, control keys (for display, etc.). First there were some problems with the network chip (Intel 82562GT), but HP fixed it in a BIOS upgrade.

At the end of 2007, I started writing DebImg (still on Ubuntu), a debian-cd replacement in Python. At the moment, debimg has been taken offline due to violating the GPL (shipping isolinux.bin). I restarted debimg in 2009, see below.

After applying for the NM process in October 2007, I finally got assigned my first AM (zobel) in December. Still running Ubuntu, I was forced to use a virtual machine running Debian for some tasks.

This changed in May 2008, when I finally switched my laptop from Ubuntu 8.04 to Debian unstable. I would have done it early, but first needed a good backup solution and no broken dependencies in unstable.

Switching to Debian helped me a lot, not only was my system now more stable, but I could now build packages and test them directly (instead of building, moving to VM, testing, moving back, signing and uploading).

In June 2008, bzed was assigned to me as my new AM, because zobel was too busy with his own life. 4 months later, in October 2008 (1 year after applying for NM), I became a Debian Developer.

On February 7, 2009 I officially restarted the DebImg project, with a new code and also a more library-like approach in order to gain more independence of configuration formats.

Linux Distributions used

  • 200? Red Hat 9.0, KNOPPIX, SUSE (none worked very well with my hardware)
  • 2006 Debian => Slackware/CRUX/Arch/Fedora/Ubuntu => Debian

  • 2007 Debian => Ubuntu

  • 2008 Ubuntu => Debian

Tips

  • If you need a Live CD, use Debian Live. It's part of the official Debian 5.0 "lenny" release.

  • Recommend Debian to Ubuntu users, and the other way around.
