Important Note
There are warnings out there about 'bricking' the computer if the BIOS is not updated before running linux. I'm not sure exactly what 'bricking' means in this context, but I started with a BIOS update.
I tried to set this up with Mint's LMDE installer (lmde-3-201808-cinnamon-64bit.iso). It may not be exactly the same as results using Debian installer, but hopefully is helpful info anyway. By all means replace this with pure Debian info as it comes available.
Mint's usual Ubuntu based edition does detect the WiFi and ethernet. After installing LMDE, I was able to boot from the Mint Ubuntu install media (I used linuxmint-19.1-cinnamon-64bit.iso), set up a chroot environment for the debian install, fix /etc/resolv.conf, and then use the working network environment from this boot media to update/install the Debian system via apt. This is a lot easier than trying to update using apt-offline.
Disable display sleep while running from the install media if there's any chance that the system might sit long enough for the screen to go to sleep. Otherwise the display will not wake up again.
I successfully set up LVM over LUKS using the export mode in the installer.
I got the NIC going by updating the kernel to the one in backports.
I got WiFi going by getting microcode (iwlwifi-9000-pu-b0-jf-b0-34.618819.0.tgz) from https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005511/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html and put the .ucode file in /lib/firmware.
This might be relevant for getting the screen to behave: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=138882 . I suspect I need appropriate NVIDIA display drivers, but I'm not there yet.
Configuration
Display
The display works while it's on, but if for any reason it turns off, then it stays black thereafter, requiring a reboot to fix it.
Audio
Seems OK, but I haven't tested this much.
Mouse
Trackpad and pointer work fine.
Power Management

Hibernate works. Suspend doesn't work, but I suspect this is not more than the Display sleep bug (see display).
WiFi
Not working
This does work using Mint Ubuntu. I then see the device being named wlp0s20f3, with modules iwlmvm and iwlwifi being loaded. Are they what is needed?
Ethernet
The X1 Extreme Gen 1 provides for ethernet with a dongle. It doesn'twork out of hte box with LMDE, but does work with Ubuntu Mint 19.1. Under Ubuntu Mint, the device appears as enp0s31f6.
