DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware.

The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware.

If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware.

  • During the test, the SATA disk controller was configured AHCI in mode.

Display

Thinkpad comes in multiple flavour, with different graphic adapter :

Intel

The Intel based T400 have an Integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD, also known as "Intel Mobile 4 Series" (device_identifier/PCI-ID: 8086:2a40, 8086:2a42, 8086:2a43)

Console:

  • You might want to modify /boot/grub/menu.lst, to set vga=871.

X-Window with vesa driver:

  • Lenny will use the vesa driver.

  • OpenGL acceleration: ?

  • X-Randr: Trying to change the resolution /!\ kills Xorg !

  • To enable/use the external monitor, you need to reboot the laptop (and close the lid before ASAP).

  • During the test, external monitor, only support resolution < 1680x1200

X-Window with intel driver:

  • {i} Note: The intel driver is intentionally not used by default on these chipsets in lenny as it's a backport and it hasn't been tested enough. (see 513080).

  • You can reconfigure /etc/X11/xorg.conf to use the intel driver:

Audio

The audio works fine out of the box (device_identifier/PCI-ID: 8086:293e)

Mouse

X-Window:

  • The ?TouchPad ("SynPS/2 Synaptics ?TouchPad") works fine out of the box.

  • The Trackpoint ("TPPS/2 IBM ?TrackPoint") works fine out of the box, but require a minor configuration to enable scrolling.

Console:

  • gpm handles all the mouses properly.

Power Management

  • Hibernation worked out of the box.
  • Suspend does not work directly. Though, enabling the Intel driver for your internal graphic card will make it work. This was covered above "X-Window with intel driver: ".

WiFi

The model is an Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5100 (device_identifier/PCI-ID: 8086:4236).

Modem

AMT / vPro

The iAMT controller is an Intel Chipset MEI Controller (device_identifier/PCI-ID: 8086:2a44).

Fingerprint reader

The Fingerprint Sensor is a AES2810 from ?AuthenTec Inc ([HowToIdentifyADevice/USB:USB ID]: 08ff:2810).

3G / GPS / HSDPA

The Built-in Ericsson F3507g Mobile Broadband (USB ID: 0bdb:1900).

  • (not covered yet, FranklinPiat has a module-assistant package, but it isn't uploaded yet )

This chip uses a common backplane for 3G/GPRS and GPS functions. With some scripts to powerup/powerdown those chips, they can be used in very simple ways: eg. chat for control/setup, wvdial for 3G (which looks like any AT serial modem), and tangogps+gpsd for GPS (which also features a well supported serial interface). Using the proposed ifup/ifdown setup from http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Ericsson_F3507g_Mobile_Broadband_Module works fine, although the shutdown sequence is blocked forever if you don't explicitly shut down the 3G interface beforehand.

Work is in progress to support the Ericsson broadband modules via NetworkManager: http://mbm.sourceforge.net/

The "GSM led" on screen bottom (next to the Bluetooth led) is on when 3G or GPS is running.

Webcam

A 1280x1024 webcam is connected to the USB internal bus ((USB ID: 17ef:1004) and works just fine with the uvcvideo driver. The 'cheese' program worked out of the box with a 2.6.29 kernel (as required for A/G/N Wireless support).

Keyboard's Hotkeys

  • The keyboard hotkeys work fine for Kernel 2.6.28 and lower.

  • Starting from 2.6.29, acpi deprecated support for Thinkpad hotkeys has been removed. For now, there are 2 solutions to this. Bug report.

Either you install a tweaked acpid, or you set hal to remap the keys to keys which can be handled by some software, in our case xbindkeys. The information that you can download the acpid package from Debian and change the input_layer.c file is false. The Debian package does not include this file in its acpid package. The hal remap + xbindkeys solution works out fine.
