DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware. The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware. If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware. |

Important Note
You need 2.6.33 to have sound come out of speakers.
Configuration
Display
Video card is quite new, nVidia ?GeForce 310M.
xserver-xorg-video-nv:
- works, version 1:2.1.17-1,
- 2D only
nvidia-kernel-source:
- works, tested version 190.53-1
- 3D too
in order to compile with 2.6.33 a patch is needed; see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=148296
- Xrandr works, but no rotate. Just resize.
Audio
- Built-in speakers don't work on 2.6.32, you need 2.6.33 in order to work. HDMI audio out not tested yet.
Sleep/Suspend
- Sleep works for certain values of works, however after wakeup a bunch of messages is spurted in kde notification area. Suspend wasn't tested.
Mouse
- Works fine.
Power Management
- There is no support for turning on or off extra features like WWAN modem or card reader. Laptop has a hard rfkill switch, but the chipset is still powered. Backlight is very tricky at the moment, but highly recommended if you don't want your eyes burned by 100% brightness. Here's (a step by step, but very scarce on detail info) how you do it:
Download tar.gz from this post http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2150974&postcount=1
Follow these instructions http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2182825&postcount=29
- sudo modprobe nvidia_bl should load okay
- cat /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness should most likely output some large number; mine was 3310664
If it's large, you need to patch the nvidia_bl.c module; roughly follow these instructions (you need to alter dmi product and vendor) http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2205097&postcount=46
- modprobe -r nvidia_bl
- modprobe nvidia_bl
add acpi_backlight=vendor to kernel line in order to make sure video module does not interfer with backlight setting
ACPI brightness FN-buttons don't work without some extra scripts, you can use these as a reference: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2181598&postcount=26
WiFi
WiFi is working with 2.6.32 and .33, but firwmare is not yet provided in Debian firmware-iwlwifi package. Firmware can be downloaded from http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=Downloads look for 6000 series.
Card reader
- Didn't manage to get card reader working. It's a PCI Express Ricoh reader, but it didn't detect the card when inserted. No idea yet.
Webcam
- Detected as USB video class device (uvcvideo kernel module) and works.
WWAN Modem
- (not covered yet)
