DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware.

The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware.

If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware.

Important Note

{X} There is currently a bug that Booting from Windows "boot.ini" is functional, but an reboot or shutdown will freeze the system. Grub in MBR is working fine.

Display

With Debian 5.0 Lenny, the Xorg display driver work out of the Box with Open GL.

# glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2
...
OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GME 20061017 x86/MMX/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 7.0.4
...

# glxgears
2713 frames in 5.0 seconds = 542.566 FPS
2775 frames in 5.0 seconds = 554.901 FPS
2788 frames in 5.0 seconds = 557.505 FPS
2783 frames in 5.0 seconds = 556.503 FPS

You may even get higher frame rates (I got up to 730). Compiz works fine.

For better performance with compiz, enable XAA in xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Configured Video Device"
        Driver "intel"
        Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
EndSection

I had no trouble with xrandr features, including driving an external 1600x1200 display.

Power Management

Suspend to ram and suspend to disk appear to work flawlessly.

By default, when suspended to disk, the Wind's BIOS will not let you access the BIOS setup or the boot menu. If that bothers you, add shutdown method = shutdown to /etc/uswsusp.conf so that the BIOS will not know that you have suspended to disk.

WiFi

Starting with kernel 2.6.29, the wifi card works out of the box, using the rtl8187se module. Note that the Fn-F11 (wlan key) controls the wifi's radio (i.e. rfkill), but the driver does not provide access (nor control) to this rfkill information. If the wifi's radio is turned off, the driver will not see any network and hence will seem to "not work".

With older kernels, use of a vendor driver is required, see rtl818x to install.

Newer version of the wind ships with a rt2860 chipset. starting with kernel 2.6.30 (which is now on testing ...) there is the right kernel module (rt2860sta ) but you'll need to install the firmware with

aptitude install firmware-ralink

Keyboard's Hotkeys

Most work as expected; for the volume keys to work, you will need the followin lines in your ~/.xmodmaprc

! F7 F8 F9
keycode 174 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
keycode 176 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume
keycode 160 = XF86AudioMute
