#language en #pragma description How to install Debian/Linux on a Lenovo Essential G580
Translation(s): none
DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware. The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware. If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware. |

Installation
I started with a Debian Wheezy amd64 DVD. Booting the installer and the installation works just fine in text but the graphical mode didn't work! I guess it was because my DVD was not clean! or maybe some nvidia optimus problem. This laptop support EUFI by default and I used debian guided install useing entire disk with separate /home partition. It separated hard drives to 4 partition. 510MB fat partition for EFI with boot flag, 10GB ext4 partition for root (/), 17.0 GB for swap and the rest for /home. but i changed the last three to be like this. 60GB for /, 17 for swap and the rest for /home.(I need a large / because I install lots of application in it). after installation it reboots to the grub just fine and boots the gnome-shell in normal way. It detects nearly all of your hardwares in wheezy including wireless card(amazing). All you have to do is install bumblebee or nvidia optimus support driver to be able to switch between intel and nvidia video cards.
Configuration
Audio
Alsa, works out of the box. but built-in microphone is not working. you should put the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (needs sudo permission) and reboot to get it to work.
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
Display
The built-in Intel graphic card works out of the box. You can still disable Optimus in the BIOS. glxgears output for intel card:
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.837 FPS
Hybrid graphics/Optimus
You can also use Optimus through the Bumblebee project.
Debian packages: z0rc's Bumblebee Debian repository
Touchpad
Need to enable tap clicking in mouse setting in system setting. Multitouch as in two finger scrolling works out of the box.
