DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware.

The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware.

If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware.

Important Note

This page was written while attemting to install Debian GNU/Linux amd64 testing Jessie two days before entering freeze period. Using only free software, and only the main repository (no contrib and no non-free). This page should probably be applicable to other Pavilion models in the dv6500 series.

Experiencing weird behaviour and crashes.

Configuration

Display

  • Sometimes there is a fatal crash with a line mentioning the Nouveau driver.

Audio

  • The sound volume keeps turning up and down all the time, showing it in the center of the display as usual in GNOME 3. EDIT: I have later learned this is due to hardware failure.

Mouse

The touchpad works flawlessly, even supporting the multitouch function. Using two fingers to scroll up and down.

Power Management

  • Power managment works well.

WiFi

The WiFi will not work with only free software.

Modem

  • (not covered yet)

System Summary

This laptop running only on free software is almost garbage. Or it may need some more configuration that I missed.
