DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware. The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware. If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware. |

Important Note
This page was written while attempting to install Debian GNU/Linux amd64 testing Jessie about commencing freeze period. Using only free software, and only the main repository (no contrib and no non-free). This page should probably be applicable to other Pavilion models in the dv6500 series.
Experiencing weird behaviour and crashes.
The h-node.org information to have into account. There is a page for a very similar laptop: https://h-node.org/notebooks/view/en/4/Pavilion-dv6530-el/1/1/Hewlett-Packard/undef/2007/undef/undef/undef/undef/undef
Configuration
Display
h-node.org has a positive report on a very similar video card to the one in this laptop. (https://h-node.org/videocards/view/en/3/NVIDIA-Corporation-G86--GeForce-8400M-GS---rev-a1-/1/1/undef/undef/undef/undef/undef/GeForce%208400) The only difference is that here we have the G86M not the G86.
- Sometimes there is a fatal crash with a line mentioning the Nouveau driver. You can get rid of this problem at the expense of installing non-free software.
This laptop has a Nvidia card with dedicated memory. Configuration instructions can be found in NvidiaGraphicsDrivers. After installation of the nvidia driver crashes occur only when returning from "suspend" state and it is no longer a fatal crash. The background image changes to a black and white pattern.
I think it is also important to remember that Jessie is not yet a stable release, so maybe everything changes as Jessie matures.
Audio
The sound volume keeps turning up and down all the time. This is very annoying, but I have learned this is due to hardware failure and is very common is this series. Using GNOME this problem can be solved simply disabling the multimedia keys by going to System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Sound and Media.
Mouse
The touchpad works flawlessly, even supporting the multitouch function. I am able to use two fingers to scroll up and down.
Power Management
- Power management works well. When returning from sleep/suspend sometimes there is a fatal crash with a line mentioning the Nouveau driver. After installing and configuring the Nvidia driver this crash is no longer fatal, all it does is change the background image to a black and white pattern.
WiFi
The WiFi will not work with only free software. To make it work it is necessary to install the firmware (https://wiki.debian.org/iwlegacy).
Bluetooth
Bluetooth works out of the box. With Jessie and GNOME Shell there is no need to install anything. All needed before use is to pair with a device. More on https://wiki.debian.org/BluetoothUser.
Webcam
- The webcam works out of the box. And it records video with sound as well.
Modem
- (not covered yet)
System Summary
This laptop running only on free software loses a great deal of his abilities.
