DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware.

The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware.

If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware.

Important Note

The installation process complains that rtl_nic/rtl8168d-1.fw is missing and permits the installation from a removable storage device. This driver is for the Ethernet card. The wired connection works without that driver during installation, WLAN was not tested. After complete system installation, also WLAN with WPA2 works without that driver.

To change the boot sequence, press F10 on computer start-up when the screen is blank, then F2.

Configuration

Display

lspci -v | grep VGA

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV710 [Mobility Radeon HD 4500/5100 Series] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

The display only started in Gnome Fallback Mode. During power-on, the following message was shown:

[drm:radeon_pci_probe] *ERROR* radeon kernel modesetting for R600 or later requires firmware-linux-nonfree.

After installation of X-( firmware-linux-nonfree the error message was gone, Gnome started in GnomeShell and 3D applications ran faster.

Audio

lspci | grep -i audio

00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
01:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV710/730 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 4000 series]

Works mostly out of the box. Plucking in a headset does not turn off speakers and device microphone. To do so, append to file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5

Mouse

Touchpad works out of the box.

Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01) : 802.11 b/g

As mentioned above, the installation process and subsequent system updates complain that rtl_nic/rtl8168d-1.fw is missing, but the network connection is running without. Installing the driver from firmware-realtek (non-free, see also Firmware) did not show any visible performance improvements or other changes.
