DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware.

The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware.

If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware.

Important Note

Dual boot: untested (worked on Stretch but on BIOS and must press F9 on boot to select "Notebook Hard Drive" after which the GRUB menu would appear.

Do not boot in UEFI mode! Grub will not install [insert exact error message here] However, it may work if you install grub to another disk but this is untested.

To boot into Legacy BIOS mode during install: - Do not use GPT for hard disk; instead, use the ms-dos table. (Default configuration if already running Windows 8).

- When the computer turns on, as soon as the screen backlight turns on, press the F10 key.

- On the boot options page, enable Legacy BIOS support

- [Insert exact procedure here]

- When booting from a live USB, press F9 and do NOT select the USB option with UEFI, but rather the other USB option.

- Continue installation as normal

During install, Wifi is confirmed to work. Ethernet is UNTESTED but assumed to work.

Configuration

Display

Without firmware-amd-graphics (nonfree), the display works, but you cannot change the screen brightness, and sometimes, if you switch virtual terminals with Ctrl+Alt+F[1, 2, 3 ... ], the colours become garbled. To fix this, install the firmware.

If using GDM (on Wayland) as the login manager (which is the default for GNOME), then GDM will not work. Installing firmware-linux-nonfree fixes this issue.

I have previously ran Buster with only Xfce and LightDM; for this configuration, the login will still work. However, the above issue about garbled colours and screen brightness still exists. For Xfce, firmware-amd-graphics is sufficient to fix the issue and the whole firmware-linux-nonfree is not needed.

Audio

Make sure you enable over-amplification in your desktop's settings to allow the speaker to be on full volume.

Mouse

No issues.

Power Management

Hibernation doesn't work properly. It will close the desktop session and turn the screen black but then stay like that. You then have to shut the laptop down from the power button. I would recommend shutting down or suspending instead.

Wifi

No issues.

Ethernet

On boot the kernel gives an error message about ethernet [to be inserted here], and an installation of firmware-realtek (nonfree) fixes this. However, without the firmware, ethernet still works.

Keyboad hotkeys

Screen brightness controls work after the installation of firmware-amd-graphics (nonfree) or firmware-linux-nonfree.

Volume controls work on Xfce after the Pulse Audio plugin (installed by default) is added to the panel.

Volume controls work on GNOME (maybe by default) but if not, then this command fixes the issue:

gsettings reset org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys volume-up
