(!) ?Discussion

DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware.

The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware.

If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware.

Configuration

Display

The included video card is a dual nForce 760i SLI (9800S chip set). This is not listed in the compatibility matrix for the nVidia drivers, but it is supported. However, you need a newer version of the driver than is available in lenny. 180.* should work. I used 185.18.14. You can either get the driver from a later Debian release or download it directly from nVidia's web site and use their installer process.

Initializing both cards required additional system memory when using an i386 bigmem kernel. The fix in the nVidia README took care of it. Add:

    vmalloc=192MB video=vesa:off vga=normal

to /boot/grub/menu.lst, run update-grub, and reboot.

Audio

According to alsamixer, the audio is Nvidia MCP7A HDMI. I got no sound when using the ALSA kernel drivers in the 2.6.26-2 lenny kernel. Installing alsa-source 1.0.20 and building its drivers worked. I have not tested the version of alsa-source that comes with lenny.

Steps:

    aptitude install alsa-source
    m-a -t auto-install alsa
    modprobe -r snd_hda_intel snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss
    modprobe snd_hda_intel
