DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware. The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware. If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware. |

Important Note
Debian bullseye was installed
the NVMe system disk will only get detected from linux 5.5 on upwards - see (https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/ec11e5c213cc20cac5e8310728b06793448b9f6d), which means that you have to install from a Debian bullseye install medium, because they are using a 5.10 kernel (at the time of writing)
the installer fails at installing grub. See https://bugs.debian.org/986893 for workaround.
the Laptop is very light and silent
the screen is extremely glossy
the laptop doesn't seem to be very serviceable, since there are no visible screws
the touchpad (a "?ClickPad") doesn't have a "middle" button, but it can be emulated. Tap to click doesn't work either out of the box and needs to be configured. See below.
having had multiple HP laptops in a row it seems HP's main focus of innovation is inventing new, twisted and absurd keyboard layouts (the layout below might be specific to my swissgerman keyboard):
the "<", ">" and "\" keys are only reachable via a Fn-, Fn-Shift, respectively a Fn-?AltGr key combo
- "{" and "}" are not next to each other and on different rows
there isn't a LED that is visible when the laptop is closed, that could tell you whether the laptop is on or suspended. Other than holding the laptop close to your ear and trying to hear whether the fan is off you can not tell whether the laptop is on or not. So on closing the lid one of the following things will happen:
- the laptop suspends are you're fine
- or it does not and you'll lose your work and the laptop will fry the contents of your backpack
suspend-to-ram (S3) does not seem to be supported?! suspend-to-disk/hibernate (S4) does not seem to be supported either so there seems to be no way to close the lid and have the laptop survive for longer than a night?!
secure boot works, but I haven't succeeded changing the boot order
Configuration
Display
Intel ?TigerLake GT2 / Iris Xe Graphics with a 17.3" touchscreen display
- everything works out of the box including the touchscreen
Audio
Intel ?TigerLake-LP Smart Sound Technology Audio Controller
works out of the box, but even though there is a "BANG & OLUFSEN" logo on the laptop, the sound is absolutely terrible. AFAI can see it does not output frequencies below 500Hz
Mouse
the Touchpad - called a "?ClickPad" in the relevant jargon - works out of the box, however:
it doesn't have a middle button, but that can be emulated like this. Note that the settings given in the link didn't work well for me. I had much too many mis-clicks and it drove me crazy. What I did was to extend the size of the middle button to both sides and make it much less high. So in order to left-click I click anywhere on the touchpad or really in the left corner of it. If I right click, then I click in the right corner touching the border of the pad. If I middle click I click "somewhere" near the middle of the touchpad (horizontally) but touching the bottom border of the touchpad. My settings:
tap to click doesn't work out of the box. Needs to be configured with Option "TapButton1" "1" as in the previous link Option "SoftButtonAreas" "66% 0 90% 0 33% 65% 90% 0"
Power Management
The laptop does not seem to support suspend-to-ram?!?!?

See https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/591488/why-does-the-kernel-lockdown-prevent-hibernation
When running an Xfce Desktop with a few Firefoxes open and working in a terminal the laptop is using ~ 13.7 Watts. When in its suspend mode it's using 4 Watts. Measured with a Brennenstuhl PM 231 E.
