DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware. The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware. If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware. |

Important Note
1 - HP provide support only for Windows 10 and 7 from their support page
2 - UPGRADE BIOS to the newest version before installing Debian (or any other distribution) - from windows (found on HP support) or from HP Utility (again to install on USB from windows ...) Check BIOS version in BIOS menu pressing F10 at startup
HP support for this model 15 as008nf The machine I bought was shipped with a revision F08 of the BIOS which made me scratched (and eventually banged) my head for month before being able to install any distribution of GNU/Linux on the internal SSD NVMe drive. The NVMe disk was randomly not recognized at startup, leading to no boot device error when grub was installed on it or to not being able to access it as secondary disk (I finally thought it was dead).
3 - If you want to boot from primary NVMe drive, note that grub should be installed in EFI mode as BIOS mode may lead to boot issues.
4 - Disable Secure Boot as it is default option and not yet supported by Debian F10 to enter BIOS
Installation notes
1 - Create a Debian USB boot drive from windows, if you only have this laptop in hands, with Rufus for example. And refer to Wifi Note before removing windows.
2 - Press F9 to select boot option and select your drive
3 - I recommend avoiding graphical install to be able to access console (to mount pen drive to /lib/firmware for example)
4 - Be careful when using automatic partitioning by Debian installer on 256Gb NVMe drive as it will create a 250Mb /boot partition only, think of purging old kernels or by manually allocating more space to /boot partition
Configuration
Display

Audio
- (not covered yet)
Mouse
No tapping after install, I have not been able yet to configure libinput for the pad to allow tapping
Power Management
Good power management, battery charge, charge display.
A couple of errors are displayed in journal by Kernel related to ACPI, which in my experience didn't lead to any issue (probably due to this BIOS which expect windows) : kernel: platform MSFT0101:00: failed to claim resource 1
kernel: acpi MSFT0101:00: platform device creation failed: -16

WiFi
The Intel Wireless 7265 shipped with this model won't work unless you provide non-free firmwares iwlwifi-7265D
You can find these firmwares either in :
* Non-free Debian install
* Or in the package firmware-iwlwifi.deb
* Or in the Kernel Page as ucode files to put at the root of a pen drive at the time of install
Note 1a : The most recent firmware seems to be version 22 (iwlwifi-7265D-22.ucode), while Debian install (Kernel ?) will ask for versions from 16 to 26 As I don't like to see error messages at startup, I symlinked the 23, 24, 25, 26 versions to the 22.
Note 1b : For the one who wonder, version 23, 24, 25 and 26 are noted as internal released and seem not to have been released for public.
Note 2 : At the time I am writing, the firmware provided by Intel at "Linux* Support for Intel® Wireless Adapters" page are not up to date (version 14) and are not accepted by the Kernel
