DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware. The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware. If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware. |

Important Note
Before installation, disable Secure Boot, change the SATA Mode to AHCI and change Fastboot to Thorough in the POST Behaviour menu of your BIOS. (Access your BIOS by tapping F2 during start-up until the BIOS-menu shows up.)
After installation if you encounter "rcu_sched detected stalls on cpus/tasks" or cpu locks. Add nouveau.modeset=0 to your kernel boot parameters. (howto: https://askubuntu.com/questions/19486/how-do-i-add-a-kernel-boot-parameter )

WiFi
Non-free firmware required. As the laptop lacks an ethernet port, install Debian using DVD iso mounted on USB. Skip network and wireless configuration. The DVD install (instead of the small netinst CD) is useful to install GNOME or some graphical interface. Using the netinst, a usb-stick will not be recognized, making the manual firmware installation difficult once Debian is installed.
So once install is done, download firmware_all*.deb, transfer to the dell via usb-stick and install. After reboot the wifi should work.
