DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware.

The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware.

If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware.

Important Note

/!\ In order to boot on a CD/DVD/USB, you have to configure the boot in NVRAM : put your medium in place, reboot, hit F2 at the start of power cycle, go to "boot", disable "Secure boot" and enable "PXE", then place your medium as the first place in boot order.

Configuration

Updated Nov 16, 2013 : a smarter boot line allows (almost) all the hardware to work fine (see below), except multi-CPU control (!).

Updated again Nov 22 2013 : Installing the proprietary Nvidia driver is enough to enable management of the F1-F4 hotkeys and is preferable (see below).

How I installed

The reported results have been obtained on a system installed by booting on a Debian (7.2) USB live and installing it, the resulting (working) system being immediately dist-upgraded to Jessie.

Necessary command parameters : acpi= nolapic. 'acpi=' is necessary to F5-F6 recognition (no, there is nothing after the equal sign !), 'nolapic' is necessary to F1-F4 recognition, but has the unfortunate consequence of losing the multi-CPU control.

More functional alternative : acpi= is enough if you have installed the proprietary Nvidia driver; that way, you get multi-CPU control back.

Display

Integrated Intel (4000?) controller (lspci says :"Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller").

Works out of the box : Xorg loads, among other, vesa, fbdev and intel drivers, recognizes the video as Intel, configures it and unloads the vesa and fbdev drivers.

Discrete Nvidia adapter (lspci says : "NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 750M] (rev a1)"). This is complicated :-)

The only reasonable "mainstreet" use of this discrete card seems to be to use it for specific applications (games, possibly video), via bumblebee and primus. Another interesting use (probably unreasonable except for some numerical geeks...) is to use it with the CUDA libraries to boost some linear algebra operations (think statistics...). Not yet explorated seriously.

This card is currently (Nov 16, 2013) too new to be supported by nouveau, you'll have to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers >= 325 if my reading of the Nvidia blurbs is correct. They are currently in experimental only. You'll have also to edit the autogenerated /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf, replacing "KernelDriver=nvidia" with "KernelDriver=nvidia-current".

I did not make a serious attempt to use it as the main X server.

Audio

Intel integrated audio (lspci says "Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller (rev 06)")

Mouse

Integrated touchpad. Xorg's synaptics module says it's a " ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad". Works out of the box.

Power Management

- Sleep : works via Fn-F1, power button and Gnome's system menu.
- Hibernate and Shutdown : work via Gnome's system menu.

WiFi

Atheros AR9485. Works out of the box.

Bluetooth adapter

Unknown model (I don't know how to hunt for this). Able to connect to my cell phone. 'Nuff said...

Modem

Not applicable

Card reader

Unknown model (I don't know how to hunt for this). Untested.

Keyboard hot keys

What works

- Sound control (Fn-F10 ==> sound toggle, Fn-F11==> volume down, Fn-F12 : volume up).
- Wifi control (toggled by Fn-F2)
- Keyboard backlightng (via Fn-F3, Fn-F4, a bit coarse)
- Power control : see above.
- Screen brightness via Fn-F5-Fn-F6
- Display On:Off : works via Fn-F7.
- Internal/external display toggle : works via Fn-F8 (tested on the mini DisplayPort output).
- Touchpad toggle via Fn-F9

What is not tested

- Keyboard hotkeys for camera (Fn-V ans Fn-C) : I get no OSD response
- Keyboard hotkeys for media player control (Fn+numeric keypad direction keys): I get a "Forbidden" icon via OSD.
