DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware.

The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware.

Steps to create a dual-boot Debian 10.9/Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard system.
My system came with 1GiB RAM, 500GB HD, slim Aluminum Apple USB keyboard and the 2.0GHz T2500 processor.

  1. Check for latest firmware on Apple's site and compare against what is installed on the machine. Update if needed. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201518

  2. Install rEFIt on the hidden EFI System Partition.
    1. Download the Mac dmg format rEFIt (rEFIt-0.14.dmg) from the project website. https://sourceforge.net/projects/refit/ If you have a fairly recent version of Firefox (48.0.2) it will have the security certificate to do this. Apple Safari (Version 5.1.10 (6534.59.10) of 2013 vintage) from Mac OS X 10.6.8 (last update of Snow Leopard) doesn't have the proper security certificate and thus won't work. If need be, you can download the needed file, rEFIt-0.14.dmg, on a different computer and copy it to a USB memory stick, then copy it from the memory stick on to the iMac in the Downloads directory. Or, if the other computer is running an ssh server and you know the IP address, from Mac OS X Terminal (open Finder, in left pane under PLACES click Applications, scroll down in right pane to the Utilities folder, open it and scroll down till you see Terminal, double click to open) you can type:

      $ scp <account name on remote computer>@<IP address of remote computer>:/<full path to downloaded file>/rEFIt-0.14.dmg Downloads/
      # for example (where "myaccount" and "192.168.1.19" need to be replaced, also the path may be different):
      # scp myaccount@192.168.1.19:/home/myaccount/Downloads/rEFIt-0.14.dmg Downloads/
      # If you don't have an ssh key generated on the iMac and the public key on the remote computer,
      # scp will prompt you to type your password for the account you are accessing on the remote
      # computer.
    2. Once the rEFIt disk image is on your iMac in the Downloads directory, type the following commands at a Terminal or command line prompt in Mac OS X:
      $ hdiutil attach Downloads/rEFIt-0.14.dmg  # Mount the dmg (disk image) 
      $ sudo mkdir /efi  # Create the mount point for the hidden EFI System Partition
      $ sudo mount -t msdos /dev/disk0s1 /efi    # Mount the hidden EFI System Partition
      $ cp -pr /Volumes/rEFIt/efi /efi/  # Copy the contents of the efi folder from the rEFIt image to /efi
      # Now you should have the subdirectories /efi/efi/refit and /efi/efi/tools on your machine.
      # Next bless the EFI System Partition to mark it bootable and set rEFIt as the boot loader.
      $ sudo bless --mount /efi --setBoot --file /efi/efi/refit/refit.efi --labelfile /efi/efi/refit/refit.vollabel
