Why this page?

Because i want to provide an up to date (December 2015) information/process/hooks for the Installation of iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) model with "Debian GNU/Linux 8 (jessie)"

Before starting

This hardware can be used with i386 or amd64 architecture.

I have used a USB keyboard and mouse. I do not know if the apple wireless keyboard and trackpad work out of the box, I don't have them and I won't use them anyway...

Get space from others filesystems or OS

With Os X Yosemite version 10.10.5:

  1. Make sure your Hard Disk is decrypted ("Security & Privacy" - "?FileVault")

  2. Use "Disk Utility" to create the needed empty space for the installation

Create a bootable debian USB stick

You should be able to use a netinst image, but because my connection here is not really good, I've preferred to download a full DVD multi-arch snapshot.

Note: this procedure requires that you create an .img file from the .iso file you download. It will also change the filesystem that is on the USB stick to make it bootable, so backup all data before continuing.

  1. Download preferred Debian ISO (as commented I've used a testing image, remember to check with MD5)
  2. Open the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/ or query Terminal in Spotlight).
  3. Convert the .iso file to .img using the convert option of hdiutil e.g.,  hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/debian.iso  Note: OS X tends to put the .dmg ending on the output file automatically.

  4. Run  diskutil list  to get the current list of devices.

  5. Insert your flash media.
  6. Run  diskutil list  again and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2).

  7. Run  diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN  (replace N with the disk number from the last command; in the previous example, N would be 2).

  8. Execute  sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/rdiskN bs=1m  (replace /path/to/downloaded.img with the path where the image file is located; for example, ./debian.img or ./debian.dmg). Using /dev/rdisk instead of /dev/disk may be faster. If you see the error dd: Invalid number '1m', you are using GNU dd. Use the same command but replace bs=1m with bs=1M. If you see the error dd: /dev/diskN: Resource busy, make sure the disk is not in use. Start the 'Disk Utility.app' and unmount (don't eject) the drive

  9. Run  diskutil eject /dev/diskN  and remove your flash media when the command completes.

  10. Restart your Mac and press alt/option key while the Mac is restarting to choose the USB stick.

Installing

Standard process. When restarted I had a lovely black screen. I've followed the steps in https://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo as a summary: 1. Add "contrib" and "non-free" components to /etc/apt/sources.list 2. apt-get update 3. apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-video-ati (remember I've used Jessie)
