Wheezy

Install Debian

  • Works

Hardware

CPU / Core i5 2.4GHz / Core i7 2.8Ghz

When you start in linux kernel of the current Debian, you will get the error following , and can not boot.

"smpboot: Booting Node 0, Processors #1"

You need to add "nosmp" option to parameter of linux kernel boot.

NOTE: confirmed, SMP works fine with jessie and sid, "nosmp" isn't needed when using grub-efi and linux-image-3.11-2 from backports

GPU / Intel

  • Not check

2D

  • KMS works.
  • you have to force fbdev or vesa driver with a custom xorg.conf
  • intel drivers works and no xorg.conf needed for X using kernel from backports

3D

  • not check.
  • gnome-shell works. Gnome needs some tweaks to be usable on HiDPI (retina) displays.

External display

  • Computer does not boot (unless you give kernel parameter "nomodeset") when you have Apple Thunderbolt 27" display connected.
  • Booting with "nomodeset" kernel parameter makes it impossible to use X, but then the USB Hub and ethernet in the external display works (so you can download wlan drivers for example).

Backlight control

  • You can use over sysfs (/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness).

SATA / Samsung Electronics Co Ltd Device 160

  • Kernel option "libata.force=noncq" is required, or random freeze encountered

Gigabit Ethernet

  • This does not have Gigabit Ethernet.
  • External Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can work with some limitations:
    • needs "firmware-linux-nonfree" installed (tg3 firmware)
    • needs to be plugged in while (re)booting the computer (hotplugging does not work)

WLAN / Wifi

  • Install "broadcom-sta-dkms" with a backported kernel from Jessie.
  • Does not work out of the box with 3.2 kernel (or with any open source drivers) and can be made to work with proprietary broadcom drivers.
    • Install "dh-modaliases" package from ubuntu repository.
    • Install "devscripts" and run "dget <url>" on the bcmwl-kernel-source source package .dsc from ubuntu.

    • dpkg-source -x bcmwl-*.dsc
    • cd bcmwl-*
    • dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us
    • (install required build-dependencies and repeat previous step)
    • dpkg -i ../bcmwl-*.deb
    • modprobe wl

Bluetooth

  • Works fine

Audio / Nvidia MCP89

  • Ear phone works
  • Speaker doesn't work

Power Management

  • Works fine but suspend

Firewire

  • This does not have Firewire. But You can use over Thunderbolt.

Apple iSight

Does not work.

Apple SD Card Reader

  • Works fine

Jessie

Install Debian

  • Works

Hardware

CPU / Core i5 2.4GHz / Core i7 2.8Ghz

  • OK

GPU / Intel

  • OK

2D

  • KMS works.
  • no xorg.conf needed for X

3D

  • It works fine.

External display

  • THUNDERBOLT->DVI works fine

  • THUNDERBOLT->VGA works fine

  • THUNDERBOLT->DVI works fine

  • THUNDERBOLT->HDMI works fine

  • HDMI works fine
  • Displayport output not tested

Some trouble (you have to plug-off then pulg-in again) when screens are turned off.

Backlight control

  • Works using hotkeys
  • You can use over sysfs (/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness).

SATA / Samsung Electronics Co Ltd Device 160

  • Kernel option "libata.force=noncq" is required, or random freeze encountered

Gigabit Ethernet

  • This does not have Gigabit Ethernet.
  • External Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can work with some limitations:
    • needs "firmware-linux-nonfree" installed (tg3 firmware)
    • needs to be plugged in while (re)booting the computer
  • External Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter hotplugging status:
    • Debian Jessie kernel linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 since version 3.16.7-ckt2-1 ships the "thunderbolt" module, which gives (limited) hotplug capabilities:
      • Needs acpi_osi=Darwin added to kernel command line (edit /etc/default/grub)

      • modprobe thunderbolt (or add thunderbolt to /etc/modules)
      • Issues after suspend/resume. The above works on regular power cycles. For details, see: http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/29954.html

WLAN / Wifi

  • Does not work out of the box (or with any open source drivers).
  • Can be made to work with proprietary broadcom drivers.
    • apt-get install broadcom-sta-dkms

Keyboard

  • F1 ~ F12 default to media key, use fn + F<num> get F<num> key.

    • This can be changed by hid-apple module options fnmode=2

Bluetooth

  • Works fine

Audio / Nvidia MCP89

  • Works fine
    • NOTE: SPDIF can be turned off by add following module options to /etc/modprobe.d/snd.conf (permanent, need reboot):
      • options snd-hda-intel power_save=1
      Or
      • # echo 1 > /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save

Power Management

  • Some troubles with hibernate and suspend
  • Works fine for me from/on GNOME+systemd in Jessie, except sometimes the proprietary wlan driver doesn't survive and a reboot is needed to get wlan back.

Firewire

  • This does not have Firewire. But You can use over Thunderbolt.

Apple iSight

  • Does not work:
    • No redistributable firmware (isight-firmware-tools can be used to extract firmware from osx)
    • This model switched to PCIe hookup of the webcam (instead of usb as previous models) and no driver exists yet

Apple SD Card Reader

  • Works fine.
