(!) ?Discussion

DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware.

The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware.

If you need help to get Debian running on your hardware, please have a look at our user support channels where you may find specific channels (mailing list, IRC channel) dedicated to certain types of hardware.

Important Note

Configuration

Display

Display works perfectly fine with opensource drivers but I couldn't get openGL nor external screen to display using this driver.

Audio

Audio works out of the box with Debian etch but the opensource drivers has some issues. == It won't play music on the headphones. * Mic doesn't work. *With some config(Intel HDA chip) you can get the headphones to work but it happens that laptop speakers still sounds when using the headphones. *I also got the mic to work but had some issues using the Sound recorder.

TouchPad

Works perfectly fine with all features.

Power Management

Hibernate worked right out of the box flawlessly. Suspend wouldn't work (to ram or to disk)

WiFi

The Broadcom wlan mini-pci chip doesn't have an open source driver, nor it has a linux driver of any form. There are opensource drivers but virtually they all use the Windows driver's firmware to work with the wifi card. NDiswrapper works using the correct firmware and also you can use the new b43 driver without ndiswrapper. I had some trouble when switching over different networks with the ndiswrapper approach, and sometimes to switch networks with different encryption required a reload of the kernel module.

System Summary

The Acer Travelmate 5510 works pretty well under Debian etch, alghouth some stuff needs some config before it is working allright.
