Welcome

This is the front page of our ["Debian"] Wiki. Experianced users may want to start at the [wiki:?DebianWikiTopics Debian Topics Page] Contributors to our Wiki may want to look at the ["?HelpWanted"] page first.

Are you new to Linux? Finding where to start can be a daunting task. There are many places to start and so much information that it can be very confusing. This wiki is a very good place to start as is the [http://www.debian.org Main Debian Website] To help sort out some of the various ?LinuxDistributions and what Linux is you can look here: [http://docs.linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/03/09/1727250 Introduction to Linux and Linux.com ]

If you have already decided that ["Debian"] Linux is for you - and you are looking at how to get it then you may just want to dive into Linux ?InstallationHelp or the [http://www.debian.org/distrib/ "Getting Debian" section at www.debian.org ]. Please note that these instructions are a little broken. Look for the [http://www.debian.org/CD/faq/ FAQ on installing Debian] If you are looking to do a net install then you can boot either from a [http://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/ CD set which you can buy], a [http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/ CD set which you can download] or a [http://www.debian.org/distrib/floppyinst floppy boot disk which you can download] (check chapter 4). Other media is also acceptable and you will want to look in [http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch02s02.html.en the Debian GNU/Linux Installation Guide: section 2.2]. Also in the floppy disk case you will need to use a utility (such as [http://sourceforge.net/projects/ntrawrite/ ntrawrite]) to create ?BootFloppy. Note that you will not find the FAQ in the [http://www.debian.org/distrib/ Getting Debian] links which lead to the floppy disk, but you will find it in the CD-ROM section.

If you are an experianced user then you can read futher and welcome to our Wiki.

IMPORTANT:

  • Read ["?UpgradeNotes"] to learn about differences in the wiki since we upgraded to Kwiki 0.36.

  • See ["?DealingWithSpam"]

  • We are asking for volunteers to be ["?WikiAdmins"] (I really need some help with this. If the spam is there for very long, it actually causes the server load to go way high. Please volunteer to help catch and kill the spam early. Thanks. –["MichaelIvey"])

Current issues

[http://lists.debian.org/debian-announce/debian-announce-2005/msg00003.html Debian 3.1 (Sarge) has been released]. Time for a ["ReleaseParty"].

Obviously the Sarge release also means that we'll start working on the Etch release - see ?"EtchTODOList".

An attempt at structuring discussion about releasing Debian, one of the most controversial discussions in Debian: ["ReleaseProposals"]

Whether you're a ["DebianDeveloper"], a ["DebianUser"], or just stopping by, we hope that you find something useful and fun here. We're glad you're here!

Where to start?

Confused, lost, or generally afraid of Wikiness? ?ReadmeFirst is the place to start. Before creating a page, read the ?TextFormattingRules , try the Sandbox and search and edit in the existing ones. I ay case, it's very important to create a link from an existing page to the new one.

Need help with ["Debian"]? Here to ask a question, or seek advice? Go to QandA and post a question.

You can look at the ?DebianWikiTopics (links to pages by categories and topics).

Just want to talk about whatever? ?ChitChat is the place to go.

Start a new thread on ?DiscussionStarters. This is the place where new topics can be started, and developed.

Click the [http://wiki.debian.net/index.cgi?action=recent_changes Changes] link to see what's been happening on the wiki.
