- What do people think?
- On domains and roles: we should be careful about defining roles because we are a volunteer project.
- Domains: They should not become a mechanism for separating out contributions and creating a hierarchy. We should create a flat hierarchy, so that anyone can make contributions to any domain.
- Proposal: People should be able to contribute in any way, and we should allow anyone to post an RFC.
- We are not a project of hundreds of people, so we don't need to divide into verticals at this point.
- Titles are good, but a role should not mean that someone gets additional duties or powers in the governance structure.
- Sunil's idea: a submission can only be merged if there is consensus. If there is NO discussion on a submission, it is assumed to be merge-ready. If there is discussion, then we will delay the merge until there is consensus. If there is a serious dispute, then we use an arbitration team to make a decision.
- He wants to make everybody empowered by not having to depend on the people who make those deicisons.
- James' idea: the people who are doing the work should be the people making the decisions.
- Joseph's idea: whether we define roles or not, people will do some tasks over time. The point of the role should be (1) to acknowledge someone's controiubitons and (2) make it easy for the public to know who to contact about a specific issue.
- Competing proposals:
- Roles are self-assigned, serve to acknowledge someone's contributions, and provide info the public vs. Roles are determined in order to distribute decision-making power
- Both proposals aim to grow the project and treat contributors fairly
- Roles are self-assigned, serve to acknowledge someone's contributions, and provide info the public vs. Roles are determined in order to distribute decision-making power
- Next up: we need to define the arbitration team's power and describe how it functions
- Sunil: only when discusion breaks down (hopefully rarely) will the arb team be involved.
- We should find ways to respect people's contributions and give them power to make decisions.
- Next call: what would be the difference in terms of the failed communication process that we had? How does each proposal treat the Card UI proposal differently?
