Contents
1. People
federico3, gnoutchd, ?IkMaak, JamesValleroy, PhilippeBaret (phylophyl), SunilMohanAdapa
2. Agenda
Full shared notes: https://pad.riseup.net/p/6UX72gFFSPZf
2.1. Translations
Consensual move from Transfex.com to Weblate.org. Consideration of donation to ensure hosting quality. FreedomBox Logo on Focusing on community should bring more users that localization platform visibility. One language wants to stay on Transifex for now. The translation of the Foundation's site and the manual should also move to weblate.
Translation efforts on hold while the strings are re-evaluated. After 0.8 is out, translation can start gathering steam.
Machine Translation: Ikmaak has some machine translations, they can be used to give new teams a starting point, but need to be imported as fuzzy, so they will not be used until checked by a human. This could cut down translation time considerably.
Languages available now as machine translation: ar, bn, de, es, gu, hi, ja, kn, ml, mr, pa, pt-PT, ru, ta, te, and zh-Hans.
What would be the best way to introduce them? How to edit the files to make them get marked as fuzzy? Should it just be added to Git and let it propagate to Weblate? What other languages would we like to add?
2.2. User Workflow
Plinth should focus on how using features not only on programs to install. ?IkMaak willing to create a consistent story to present the freedoms FreedomBox offers for 0.8.
2.3. Business
Anyone can sell freedomboxes said SunilMohanAdapa. We want to encourage that. Certification by the Foundation to distribute FreedomBox software is not ready yet. (?BeagleBone, ?CubieTruck, Olimex Lime have clean boot process, 3d hardware and wifi require non free hardware, but can be ignored). Certification by FSF is looked into.
Status: we are close to business standard (99% ready to ship, what is that 1%?)
?IkMaak provided courses for ?RepRap project, is willing to organise courses covering FreedomBox usage as well (http://ikmaak.nl/eenblog/tag/cursus/).
Distributed dealers, central buying system proposed by ?IkMaak to keep sales within the community instead of big businesses.
PhilippeBaret talked about investors connection and running content pages seo oriented to promote boxes.
2.4. Landing Page
gnoutchd controls the freedombox.org domain, this will be turned over to the Foundation, this domain can be used for emails as well, some people saw interest in using email addresses for external communication.
?IkMaak and Philippe would like to be involved it the setup of the landing page, Philippe on the SEO and speedyness for google etc, and ?IkMaak on the information provided. mray is the one who did the visual identity manual, we need to ask him too.
SunilMohanAdapa talked about making a clean website / landing page with 5 sections (clean presentation + features + download + engage/participate).
This would need a signup page for announcements, gnoutchd needs to look into setting up a mailing list, and a way to measure signups by date, to track effect.
Examples:
2.5. !FreedomBox primary router and Network Configuration
FreedomBox has two possible main modes of connection, replacing the router, and behind it. Both seem to be needed, so there is no "first" use case. We need to support both.
In most countries the number of routers provided by internet providers is low, making a shortlist could make for a limited nr of routers to setup with port forwarding to solve most issues behind a router.
Use of network manager could get us 3G/WiMax support in 2 days of work each. This could perform as a good backup connection.
https://omnia.turris.cz/en/ works on essentially the same issue, see how they solve it.
2.6. Open pgp signing address
Context: difficult to get pgp on keys, get somehting closer to f509 certificates, being able to prove email address, open pgp signing address
Would a module in plinth offering to easily sign the certs of friends on FreedomBox be interesting?
Factor is: most of the time my target is a person, not an email address
https://github.com/NickDaly/FreedomBuddy We need to find out if this is still current, and who's working on it.
2.7. FOSDEM
Frederico, MJones and ?IkMaak want to attend, and would like to present the FreedomBox there. The CfP has ended though
see https://fosdem.org/2016/news/2015-09-24-call-for-participation/
2.8. UPGRADING
We had some issues in the 0.6 cycle due to Django getting upgraded to 1.9 in Debian. We need to make sure these issues do not break all up-to-date installs. Was this a known upgrade? How do we track the upstreams we depend on?
3. TODOs
[] Price of donation. Sunil and Philippe willing to donate also.
[] Landing page
[] Create freedombox.org emails
[] Create new story to tell to users how to use the box
[] Fix the 1% that is needed to make it ready to ship.
[] ?IkMaak encourages anyone that is using/developing FreedomBox to send some info on the special features they perceive in FreedomBox, and their reasons to work on it, to improve the info we provide to newcomers, and the new strings to present to users in 0.8.
