FreedomBox Task for Debian Installer
Configuration and automatic upgrades (Sunil) http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/freedombox-discuss/2014-April/006333.html
- James: We have problems upgrading packages in Debian after changing configurations. The upgrade fails because the config changed.
- Sunil: Debconf is good, but will block upgrades. Users can use any appropriate agent to configure applications (plinth, webmin, cli, etc.) and those wishes must be preserved through upgrades. Debconf can handle what it can handle, but it can't handle much. If debconf doesn't recognize the change (or the user changes outside of the debconf tool), it'll halt upgrades. We can split files into multiple directories, but that still fails when changing core functionality.
- Augeas would load the config tree and should merge the user's changes and the upgrade changes.
- Debconf splits the user's config into a different place than the actual config, which should *only* be a cache. If packages are looking directly to debconf, they're buggy.+
- See joeyh's Propellor?
- User configuration changes shouldn't prevent upgrades! Otherwise, it's impossible to *use* a system.
See https://wiki.debian.org/PackageConfigUpgrade#Upgrades_with_Config::Model and the Augeas backend for config::model!
- This is a longer-term change.
- Debconf won't help you change a thing it hasn't already changed: dpkg-reconfigure: fbx-ml: 2014-April/006333.html
- Status update and progress for Demo target (Sunil).
- Documentation: manual retrieved from wiki
- Lots of cleanups
- mod_ssl vs mod_gnutls
- gnutls: less well established, there's an open Debian bug. (some discussion on #798415)
- pgp client certificates: can we do pgp-cli-certs on openssl? nope. you'd probably have to add a WoT backend to modssl. doesn't sound easy
- SSL license issue (see discussion on bug #798415)? the 4-clause BSD license (with advertising clause) might be license-incompatible with GPL, meaning that we'd have to jump through lots of hoops to use it correctly. Debian's already answered this question by choosing mod_gnutls.
- Moving mod_auth_env to Debian Proper: Nick can help, but will need Bdale to sign off.
- FBX-Setup is ready for 0.6 release? Yup.
- As long as we don't change FBX-Setup, we can test images quickly.
- Plinth is ready for 0.6 release?
