  • X-( Are you Mad at me ? If you got mad because of some "clean-up" i have made, please :

    1. Undo and do how you feel it would be the best for wiki.debian.org.

    2. Forgive me. I am not doing it because it's funny (trust me, it isn't funny to spend hours removing or merging pages). I'am not willing to bother people (I know that some people spent quite some time writing those pages).

    3. Read more below to understand why i am doing this.

Some ideas about what Debian Wiki is :

  • Focus on what's useful to Debian - is the page useful ? is the page related to debian ?

Some ideas about what Debian Wiki isn't:

  • wiki.d.o isn't www.debian.org/doc/ - avoid duplicating the official documentation

  • wiki.d.o isn't packages.debian.org - don't just duplicate package description and meta-data here.

  • wiki.d.o isn't a manpages repository. - don't just duplicate a manpage here

  • wiki.d.o isn't wikipedia - link to wikipedia, rather duplicating content here (especially for non-debian specific)

  • wiki.d.o isn't dictionary - don't create a page to merely define a term. link to online dictionary if needed.

  • wiki.d.o isn't jargon file - same as dictionary and wikipedia above.

Some best practice for wiki editors :

  • less is more : Perfection is not when there is nothing to add, but when there is nothing to remove. (Antoine de Saint-Exupery). To put it another way, Once you have finished to write a page, it's time to consider to make it shorter

  • Obsolete content should be 1)Updated 2) Deleted ... or exceptionally, 3)Preserved for Historical purposed (and marked as such). note: oldstable isn't obsolete content, it IS current.

  • Subscribe to the page you are interested in.
  • recommend the use of proper terms (X11, XWindow and Xorg aren't interchangeable words..)

Hints and tips

Here's the top ten things I do on a system (user preferences):

  • Edit ~/.bashrc
    • Enable export LS_OPTIONS='--color=auto' ; eval "`dircolors`" ; alias ls='ls $LS_OPTIONS'

    • Enable shell completion, by appending source /etc/bash_completion

  • Install vim, then enable some options in /etc/vim/vimrc (especially set incsearch, syntax on, and set showmatch. see my .vimrc).

  • Install mc, screen, tree, xnest, fast-user-switch-applet, iotop, htop

  • Enable default saved in /boot/grub/menu.lst

  • Install some mozilla's : web-developer

and some system hints

Visitors comments

Why did you delete the dash page ? I don't understand why speak of bash in a lot of pages and we don't speak of dash (DashAsBinSh sell nothing about dash why use it ? and we keep a page as DebianEeePC/Dash). I'm think is really not until to make an wiki if we don't speak before an delete and if user have more information on wikipedia or with search by google. What is the advantage of wiki debian on the wikipedia or other wiki by exemple ? If the information of this page dash is sufficient why make a wiki ? If the work is create page to make a link to packages.debian.org the administrator can create a script. I can't understand why destroy the page on dash to this limite to dashasbinsh. Is not my concept of the work and I don't see a page who explain the rules of this wiki. You (this wiki) have don't need me to exist, it's really dommage. (I wait your answer). -- MichelBarret

  • Hello, I merely moved the content of the page to a different page (restructure). The reason is that most of the documentation related to a package (dash) should be inside the package (I still hope that Debian publishes on the web all the documentation included inside package...).

For example, the page Bash won't ever contain much more information than what it does currently: There are many existing documentation about bash and POSIX shells out there, we don't need to create our own. Regarding generic information about Bash/Dash... wikipedia is doing a very good job. IMHO, the Bash page should be removed.

However, we need to provide information that are specific to Debian. In this case, we need to tell the user which shell to choose and when. We need to explain how to change them. That's why I have developed the page Shell, using and expanding your contribution.

    > If the information of this page dash is sufficient why make a wiki ? => That's the point. The wiki should provide the information that's doesn't exist elsewhere.

    > You (this wiki) have don't need me to exist, it's really dommage. => I am not sure I understand what you mean. Your contribution is valuable, I just moved.

    -- FranklinPiat 2009-08-16 13:35:01

    • Oh I see the fr/Shell… redirect to english version… great! The information to dash is in english… great! To have an information on dash go to DashAsBinSh (why anybody go on Dash ? … ). This wiki is make to english users ? Ok. I don't see how can help the wiki.

      -- MichelBarret 2009-08-16 15:24:46

      • As you understood, those redirect pages where transitional (the page were completely re-written, so the translation page needed to be rewritten too). -- FranklinPiat 2009-08-16 18:59:57

-- FranklinPiat 2009-08-16 18:59:57

I have finally resolve this problème Dahs redirect to ?DashAsSh in english and french versions. Maybe can I traduct my current work. We don't a lot of, I don't like traduct, so I think speak togethers contributors will be better to the quality of this wiki. I hope no others contributors was stop their work for this reasons… -- MichelBarret 2009-08-16 16:29:38

      • The page Dash isn't actually needed, does it? -- FranklinPiat 2009-08-16 18:59:57

        • A lot of body use wikipedia without open a page wikipedia, they write the begin of url « http://fr.wikipedia.org » and add a word. I know many website which make it and all my on jabber. -- MichelBarret 2009-08-16 21:16:41

          • That's something people can do on Wikipedia, because it's an encyclopedia which is meant to cover all the words (including variants, brands...). On Debian, the list of packages is listed in packages.debian.org and that's the place where people should search for information about package. A few packages deserve a wiki pages (to explain how to install non standard programs, like FlashPlayer. To document some problems related to the packages in stable, like Xen). Two important missing features are:

            1. Publish the README.Debian files (on packages.debian.org)
            2. Link or include wikipage, from packages.debian.org

Overall, you might wonder why I am reluctant to create more wiki pages... well, the main reason is that Moinmoin search ranking is nowhere close to google (i.e all match are displayed in random order). So if one search for a word (try "kernel") and gets tons of pages listed but most of them are almost empty, obsolete, or #redirect pages, that would be boring and people don't use the wiki "because it's crap". [On Wikipedia, someone can create a page with 2 lines, and expect the next 500 contributors to complete the page... it isn't the case on other wikis].
Another concern, is that each page has to be maintained (updating and dropping contents, updating links, formatting, translation) => someone needs to spend the time doing the job. I can tell you that very very very few people are interested in doing it. -- FranklinPiat 2009-08-17 06:33:34
