stow is an alternative to CheckInstall, in that it manages software compiled from source. However checkinstall is probably preferable since it keeps track of dependencies etc.
On the other hand, using checkinstall could (possibly) prevent your system from upgrading etc., since the self-packaged software will affect stock packages. Since stow manages /usr/local/ directly it does not have this potential issue.
Should stow even be mentioned?
