News for Debian developers

This wiki page collects small news that all developers should know but that are not worth a dedicated mail to debian-devel-announce. Follow the template "Example of news" and add your news below it. If there are some other items already, please sort your item in descending order of importance to the Debian development community. See /Help for more information on how to write entries. If you have any questions, please ask the publicity team or the the Debian English localisation mailing-list.

If you are able to post to debian-devel-announce (all Debian members can) and there are 5 or more items below, you might want to send out the news. To send out a new issue, you can use this helper script to generate the email version of this page. After generating the mail, proof-read it, correct any spelling, formatting or grammatical errors and send out the mail. Once the mail is sent and archived, please delete the items that were sent, add a link to the archived mail in the Previous news section and mention the mail in ProjectNews.

Updated mentors.debian.net

There has been a heavy update of the codebase of mentors.debian.net, including moving from Python 2 to 3 and changing frameworks from Pylons to Django. A few new features were also introduced. More details are available in the announcement mail.

Please consider being available to support our newcomers by reviewing packages, and reporting any bug you may find while using mentors.debian.net in the salsa project.

Removal of debhelper compat 5 and 6

As announced, debhelper compat 5 and 6 are now planned for removal. This is expected to happen no later than during the bookworm development cycle (buster + 1).

Please review your packages affected by the removal and plan their migration to a supported compat level. Please keep in mind that compat bumps are NOT accepted during the freeze per the FAQ from the Release Team about unblocks.

The differences between compat levels are documented in "man 7 debhelper".

new Debian world map

There is a new world map of Debian Developers available at https://map.debian.net/. Currently it contains data from the keysigning offers list in the wiki. If you spot problems: Development happens at salsa, feel free to report issues and send pull requests, especially for additional Debian location data sources.

Janitor Merge Proposals Now Include Debdiff / Diffoscope Output

Merge proposals created by the [janitor](https://janitor.debian.net/) now include the debdiff between a build with and without the changes (showing the impact to the binary packages), in addition to the merge proposal diff (which shows the impact to the source package).

New merge proposals also include a link to the [diffoscope](https://www.diffoscope.org/) diff between a vanilla build and the build with changes. Unfortunately these can be a bit noisy for packages that are not reproducible yet, due to the difference in build environment between the two builds.

This is part of the effort to keep the changes from the janitor high-quality.
