News for Debian developers

This wiki page collects small news that all developers should know but that are not worth a dedicated mail to debian-devel-announce. When we have collected 5 items, we'll send the content of this wiki page to debian-devel-announce. Follow the template "Example of news" and add your news below it. See /Help for more information on how to write entries.

Example of news

This is a sample news. Copy it and edit the title, content and signature... You can use links like this. Put real news below this sample.

Screenshots on packages.d.o

You may have noticed that packages.d.o now includes screenshots with a link to a the Debian screenshots site. Where a screenshot isn't available a "No screenshot available" image invites users to submit screenshots. Any one can easily contribute and after approval your screenshots will be available on the web and to packages.d.o, synaptic, aptitude-gtk, software-center and probably soon (via games-thumbnails) goplay. The Debian screenshots site has been running for almost 2 years and has accumulated over 2200 screenshots for 1700 packages but still lacks screenshots for many packages so why not upload screenshots today? The screenshot meta-data is available via JSON (1, 2) and UDD. If you would like to work on 'debshots', the software behind the Debian screenshots site, please check out the git repository and send Christoph Haas some patches. There are improvements to be made, especially around integration with packages.d.o.

BTS Version Tracking explained

There still seems to be a lot of confusion on how the version tracking in the BTS works. I wrote a lengthy blog entry which explains why some bugs won't get archived even though they got closed a while ago already.

Latest features of dpkg-dev

Raphaël Hertzog has been blogging about the latest features of dpkg-dev. He also gave a talk at the recent MiniDebConf in Paris, France (slides). His blog posts and talk covered several areas, including the new source package formats, source package build options, the maintainer scripts helper, vendor differentiation support (patches, build rules), symbols files for libraries, build flag customisation and more.
